Patrick Eaves Clears Waivers: Will be Assigned to Grand Rapids

Jerome Miron-USA TODAY Sports

In the last step of the moves necessary to clear enough cap space for the Red Wings to bring defenseman Jonathan Ericsson off the Long Term Injured Reserve list, the team placed Patrick Eaves on waivers at noon yesterday, allowing any team to pick him up at his current $1.2M salary.

All 29 teams had until noon today to make a waiver claim on Eaves and passed that up for various reasons (the cap being artificially low this year for one). Since he cleared, he's now eligible to be assigned to the Grand Rapids Griffins. Sending him to the team's AHL affiliate clears his roster space and, more importantly, it clears $925,000 off the team's salary cap commitment, which gives the club enough room to accommodate Ericsson's $3.25M cap hit, which became a non-issue for cap compliance when he went on the LTIR.

The team may recall Eaves any time they have both the roster and cap space to do so, or they may still trade him to any team willing to take him (as an added bonus under the new CBA, they can also agree to retain up to 50% of his salary in any trade). Eaves can spend up to 9 games or 29 days with the Wings before he would have to clear waivers again to be reassigned if a call-up were to happen.
