He's done it again, folks. Detroit Red Wings 20th overall pick Anthony Mantha has done it again with a GWG against Team Russia in the first game of the Subway Super Series. For those of you who don't know exactly what the Subway Super Series is, it's basically an exhibition tournament held between Russian junior hockey teams and Canadian junior hockey teams.
The line of Anthony Mantha - Jonathan Drouin - Charles Hudon dominated the entire game producing all of Team QMJHL's goals.
"Mantha, taken by the Detroit Red Wings with the 20th pick of the 2013 draft, scored the winner at 15:53 of the third. Hudon carried the puck into the Russia end and dropped it for Drouin. His shot was blocked, but Mantha grabbed the loose puck in front of the Russia net, kicked it his backhand in the crease and scored."
Anthony Mantha currently leads the QMJHL in scoring, which by the way, is not a close race. He has 54 points (24 goals, 30 assists.) The next highest scoring player is Anthony DeLuca with 39 points (21 goals, 18 assists.)
Anyways, Mantha finished the game with 1 goal(GWG), 1 assist, and a +3 rating. He also got called for a 2 minute minor for slashing. Analysts have been praising Big Tony for his presence in front of the net. Which, for Red Wings fans, is always a welcomed attribute.
Here is the full game report.
Team QMJHL plays again on Wednesday. Red Wings fans should be excited for this kid. He's a guy with natural goal scoring abilities and a mind that knows how to move the puck from point A to point B (point B being in the back of the net.) He is knocked for his lack of intensity and 2-way abilities, but those are two things that can be taught. Especially by this organization. His goal scoring abilities, however, are innate. Very excited to see him grow.
You go, Mantha! Get on 'witcha bad self!
