CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 0 - Predators 2

Gregory Shamus

I'm on vacation and I'm putting as much effort into this intro as the Wings did into winning this game.

Hey, this one wasn't on the refs.

Goaltending

Jimmy Howard didn't shut out the Predators and score a goal himself. Jerk.

The Goals

2nd Period 19:05 - Nashville Goal (PP): Shea Weber (slapshot) from David Legwand
The Preds get all the scoring they need on a pointless turnover that turns into a blast through traffic into the net. Joakim Andersson throws the puck around the boards, only to have it picked off at the top of the zone. Legwand gets it over to Weber, who blasts it through traffic and in. Andersson not only fails the clear, but the lane between Weber and the net is his coverage area. I'm going to give Andersson a minus on this play, split between turnover and coverage.

3rd Period 07:13 - Nashville Goal: Gabriel Bourque (backhand) from Viktor Stalberg
Another breakdown in the Wings' end turns into a goal for the opposition. Stalberg crosses center ice on the rush, going from the left wing side across the middle and getting a shot off from just inside the right wing lane. The puck bounces off the end boards and right to Bourque, who slides it behind Howard. Bertuzzi will get a minus for the coverage on this play. He takes a step when Stalberg is coming across the trolley tracks and lets him off the hook, instead running a pick that gives Stalberg the room he needs to make this play. Ericsson and Kronwall will each get an extra minus for the turnover that gives Stalberg the plus and then for a rather soft backcheck that ends with each of them getting beaten to the puck by Bourque. Datsyuk will keep his minus for essentially letting Bert play center here. Zetterberg will be cleared.

Penalty Adjustments

1st Period 07:45 - Brian Lashoff (hi-sticking): Inability to control the stick. Minus for Lashoff
1st Period 09:03 - Matt Cullen (holding the stick):
Cullen takes the Preds off the PP as he tries to cheat to get around Drew Miller, who will get a plus.

2nd Period 06:22 - Jonathan Ericsson (holding): Riggy uses the free hand. Easy call to make. Minus for Ericsson.
2nd Period 10:59 - Mike Fisher (holding): Darren Helm does the work to create the penalty on this one. Plus for Helm.
2nd Period 15:04 - Niklas Kronwall (hooking): This one was a bit soft, but it's a good call. Minus for Kronwall.
2nd Period 19:00 - Drew Miller (hooking): Another lazy stick penalty for the Wings and another minus; this one for Miller.

3rd Period 10:42 - Daniel Cleary (hi-sticking): Cleary tries a one-handed stick-lift in the neutral zone and accidentally chips Colin Wilson's tooth. Minus for Cleary.
3rd Period 16:15 - Mikael Samuelsson & Viktor Stalberg (mutual hugging): Near the end of a frustrating game in which the Wings got outworked and pushed around, Mikael Samuelsson was too much of a jerk to agree with Stalberg about dropping the gloves. I'm going to give Samuelsson a minus. We get through almost 57 minutes of wanting to see somebody get his ass kicked and Samuelsson won't oblige.

Bonus Ratings

-1 to Pavel Datsyuk, Henrik Zetterberg, and Johan Franzen: The standard-bearers for the Wings didn't carry the standard for the Wings. The top six has got to be better.

Honorable Mentions:

I thought Brendan Smith was certainly not-bad, but nobody was really much good in this game.
