Lots of sources have this, but Bob McKenzie is my favorite, so his Tweet gets embedded.
The team hasn't released any more info and the diggers haven't gotten to it yet, but I'm guessing that this is a case of being unable to find a trade partner for Tootoo, although there is a possibility that the team would prefer to keep him, but has to waive him in order to make some more important moves.
Either way, the entire NHL will have until tomorrow to put a claim on Tootoo and his $1.9M salary. If he remains unclaimed, the Red Wings may send him to Grand Rapids and clear $925,000 worth of his cap hit, as well as his roster spot from the books.
Tootoo has played in 8 games so far this season and has been held without a point, going -4 in that stretch on the Wings' fourth line.
[Edit: Ansar Khan of MLive is the first on my feed to get a quote from Babcock]
Babcock said waiving Tootoo comes down to numbers, they have too many RW. Said they want to give him chance to play elsewhere.— Ansar Khan (@AnsarKhanMLive) November 6, 2013
