UPDATE: Detroit Red Wings' Jordin Tootoo Clears Waivers

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Clearly, I was rooting against this.

Looks like all 29 teams passed on the opportunity to grab the kind of player who's been moving more often than any other type early in this season. Jordin Tootoo and his $1.9M cap hit will remain in the Red Wings' organization for the foreseeable future.

According to Ken Holland yesterday, this does not mean that Tootoo will be sent to Grand Rapids yet. The team has 10 games or 30 days to assign him without having to put him through waivers again.  If Tootoo is assigned to Grand Rapids (or anywhere else, with his permission), Detroit will clear his roster spot and $925,000 of his salary, leaving $975K worth of cap hit on their books.

It's not completely unheard of for a team to trade a player who has cleared waivers. Just last season, the Carolina Hurricanes waived Jussi Jokinen. He was able to clear waivers on March 27th. Then, on April 3rd, Jokinen was traded from the Hurricanes to Pittsburgh in return for a conditional draft pick and a portion of his salary staying with the Hurricanes.

Tootoo may play during this upcoming stretch until the Red Wings need to clear some room to accommodate the returns of defensemen Jonathan Ericsson and Brendan Smith. Adam Almquist will likely head down to make room for Smith while Tootoo would have to be assigned or removed in favor of Ericsson. Since both blueliners are set to return around the same time, we're looking at probably another week of Jordin Tootoo in Detroit, unless somebody else goes down with an injury in that time.
