Sunday Special: Red Wings 8, Canucks 3

USA TODAY Sports

The Red Wings capped off an excellent weekend of wins with a touchdown and two point conversion against the Canucks

If the Red Wings are going to play like that when I have to write the recap, well shit, I should do this more often. The game started out shaky with an early goal by Vancouver, but things sure picked up quickly with five total goals in the first period. The second period saw a hat trick of power play goals from Detroit. Which I am pretty sure they scored more PP goals in that single period than they have all season. The third period was a lot of Vancouver early and a lot of Detroit late. Joakim Andersson got in on the party scoring his 2nd and 3rd career goals as the Wings. Damien Brunner had 2 goals and 2 assists. He's your player of the game as the Wings embraced the hate and crushed the Canucks 8-3.

  • The Sedins are good. They worked their magic and the Canucks scored before the Wings even registered a shot on net. Nice move by Alain Vigneault to get his top guys out against the Detroit's 4th line after an icing. The move worked.
  • I wanted to write a bullet about the Wings blowing a glorious chance to tie the game with two power play chances, but then Jordin Tootoo tied it. It's more fun with he ties games 2-2, but who am I to complain. Nice individual effort by #22.
  • It doesn't count as a power play goal, but Niklas Kronwall scored on a 6-on-5 delayed penalty situation. Nice work by Dan Hamhuis to screen Roberto Luongo and get the deflection on the goal. Justin Abdelkader should take some notes.
  • Stupid lively boards at the Joe. What a pass by Henrik Sedin to Daniel Sedin off the back boards for Vancouver's 2nd goal. Am I the omly person that thinks the Sedins look like the red head chick from LOST?
  • Daniel Cleary scored a power play goal for the second straight game. That's not a typo. I'm done giving Cleary crap for the next few games.
  • Patrick Eaves scored... but it didn't count because Luongo had "possession" on a delayed penalty call against the Canucks. Henrik Zetterberg scored one that counted though with the man advantage on a nice re-direct of a Pavel Datsyuk pass. The PP now has scored 3 times in the last 2 games.
  • What I meant to type was the PP has scored 4 times in the last 2 games because the guy (see picture below) I predicted would lead the team in goals this season scored his team leading 9th goal. He then added his 10th goal of the year. Keep shooting, kid.

  • Kronwall now leads all NHL defenseman in points with 15. If we learned anything from Erik Karlsson last season, it's that Kronner is going to win the Norris now. He'll also get stepped on by Matt Cooke next season and tear his Achilles.
  • The bottom six used to be a real problem for the Wings. Not so much lately. The addition of Tomas Tatar and Joakim Andersson really have helped this team out a lot. They clearly have chemistry together from playing in Grand Rapids and Eaves has done a great job as the third man on that line. The 4th line with Tootoo, Drew Miller and Cory Emmerton has performed well too. Those three have grown together as a line and are able to grind out some shifts and lay the body on the opposition.

That was a fun game and another much needed win for the Red Wings. It was a huge weekend to help calm down the fan base and prevent anyone from jumping off a cliff. It's still going to be a roller coaster season and a tough road trip awaits, but at least right now we can enjoy the high of an 8-3 win over a very good team.

Let's Go Red Wings.
