CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 0 - Sharks 2

USA TODAY Sports

Game 34 of 48

It's late and this game was boring. The Red Wings lost and ended their road trip with only six of eight possible points.

There was one penalty called in this game. Needless to say both sides got away with a lot. I can't confidently say what I think would have happened had the refs called a tighter game because the Sharks generally outplayed the WIngs, but it at least feels like the stnadard was more beneficial to the style of game the Sharks wanted to play.

Goalie Ratings

Jimmy Howard got beaten twice on 24 shots and ANtti Niemi got beaten zero times on 27 shots. It's a tough game to do this, but Howard lost the head-to-head, even though he didn't have a bad game. Overall, I'm going to give him an even rating.

The Goals

1st Period 18:59 - San Jose Goal: Joe Pavelski (Niklas Kronwall) from TJ Galiardi and Ryane Clowe
The Sharks win a board battle behind Detroit's net and Pavelski takes a few steps around to attempt a pass out front. Kronwall blocks the pass in the worst-possible manner, by accidentally kicking the puck into the net. This one is shitty luck, but I don't like the Wings losing that board battle. The minus for this is going to go to Ericsson. Z makes a good play on Pavelski, but Ericsson is slow to react and then lets Clowe get body position to turn this into a 2-on-1 against Z. Still, Z and Kronwall are going to keep their minuses. Miller and Filppula will be cleared.

3rd Period 02:07 - San Jose Goal: Brent Burns (wrist shot) from Joe Thornton
Brian Lashoff turns the puck over in his own zone and Thornton finds Burns on the wing to roof the puck in. Lashoff will pick up the turnover minus. Minuses cleared for Miller, and Andersson. Cleary will keep his minus because the Wings are regrouping thanks to his failure to keep the zone. Smith is caught in a bit of a tough spot, but he reacts slowly and lets Burns get to the puck.

Bonus Ratings

-1 to Valtteri Filppula: Flip had a pretty bad game for holding onto the puck and making smart decisions.
-1 to Jakub Kindl: Kindl struggled with the San Jose forecheck and got himself caught up the zone on a play where Ian White had to bail him out.
+0.5 to Pavel Datsyuk: The only consistently dangerous forward for the Wings in this game, Datsyuk passed up a few good opportunities to shoot, but he was overall very strong.
-1 to Cory Emmerton: This one is somewhat cumulative, but zero shots on goal, 20% on faceoffs and near-complete invisibility got him here.

Honorable Mentions:

White had the great 2-on-1 breakup and then really nothing else impressive. Kronwall played a few pretty good shifts and a few pretty bad ones; I'd give him a goal-saved plus for defending his empty net with a few seconds remaining, but then I'd also have to give him a minus for it basically being his fault he had to do that in the first place and that's not worth it. Zetterberg had hustle, but didn't get much in the way of results or create chances.
