I don't think I have ever been so nervous heading into a Wings game. A loss would set off a chain of events that would lead to me probably never turning on my computer again. I would never be able to read all of those doom and gloom comments about how the Wings suck now.
We are back into a playoff spot. Although we are tied for 7th with Minnesota, I think we all can breath out a bit. Not so much due to the standings but more over how the Wings played. Here's why:
The first period was much of the same for the Wings. Lots of turnovers, some half-decent scoring attempts and some great saves by Jimmy Howard. Throw in your typical bad call and an injury scare and you have the Wings season summed up in a nut shell.
The Wings picked up the tempo in the second period. The Brunner - Andersson - Nyquist line nearly gave the Wings the lead before the captain took matters into his own hands. Zetterberg managed to shoot in a rebound from a Danny DeKeyser shot to give the Wings the lead. This was DeKeyser's first career NHL point.
I liked the way that the Wings had played through the first two periods. The pace was good and they were creating scoring chances. But all of that would be tested during the third period.
Just as it seemed as if the game would end with a score of 1-0, Johan Franzen puts a nice backhander past Rinne to make it 2-0. Two minutes later, Justin Abdelkader finished the game off by scoring an empty netter.
The Wings played good and looked confident in their game. I REALLY liked the way that Nyquist played and I think he is really becoming a fantastic threat for us.
We can still make the playoffs, in fact, we WILL make the playoffs. We are the Red Wings and we will pull through. I know that being in 7/8th place sucks and it is frustrating but I don't think anyone put it better than Mike Babcock himself. "Frustration is a waste of time".
Next up for the Wings are the Calgary Flames on Wednesday.
Lets Go Wings!
