Detroit Red Wings Roster News: Riley Sheahan Recalled

Harry How

The Red Wings have announced they have recalled Riley "Tinky Winky" Sheahan* from Grand Rapids. Sheahan, 21 (now) has put up 35 points in 67 games with the Griffins this season. Mike Babcock has stated he'd like to give the 6'2" 212lb forward some chances to see what he's got, but this is just as likely a precautionary move in case somebody's not ready to go. The Griffins are currently in Abbotsford, so an emergency recall for a 12:30 game tomorrow would be a little tricky.

Currently, the Wings have only 12 healthy forwards and Mike Babcock said last night that Zetterberg tweaked his groin, so it's possible that Sheahan gets in. If he does, he'll trade out his #19 in Grand Rapids for #15 for Detroit.

From my understanding of the rule (courtesy Allan Muir), this is ok because the limit on AHL call-ups has disappeared for the new CBA. The Wings sent down four players and immediately recalled them on deadline day so they could make those players eligible to play for the Griffins in the Calder Cup Playoffs. Sheahan already qualifies for that, having been on their roster on deadline day.

*I tease, but the kid owned up to his mistake and didn't try to make excuses.
