Would you be ok with the Wings missing the playoffs in 2013? Does the playoff streak mean that much to you?
These are legitimate questions to ask for us Red Wings fans. I was born in 1979, so for most of my life, the Red Wings have been contenders for the Stanley Cup. However, there was that stretch in the 80's when my dad would take me to see Steve Yzerman and Bob Probert (as if the rest of the team didn't matter). I sort of feel the same way today. Other than Pav and Z, who else can really put this team on their back? This team doesn't lack talent, but it's in need of at least two game changers (under 30 years old) to get this ship turned around. When the Wings brought in Fedorov, you knew he was going to make an instant impact on both ends of the ice, and he did that for years (while frustrating us of course...) The same thing for Pav, Z. These were players that could completely turn the game around for a team. For the first time in my life, I fear the Red Wings don't have this type of player ready to take over like Pav and Z. Sure, it could be Jarnkrok, Nyquist, and Tatar. Game changers though? That remains to be seen. They need that 19/20 year old kid that's just too damn good to keep in the AHL, or overseas. The draft is the only way to get that type of talent in today's NHL.
That takes me back to my original question..... If the Wings miss the 2013 playoffs, they will most definitely get the best draft pick they've had since picking 19th in 2005 (lockout lottery draft). The team as currently constructed, is not a playoff team. I personally would be ok with missing the playoffs and ending the streak in favor of having a real chance at getting a high draft pick in a very deep draft. It would suck to miss the playoffs, but unless you truly believe this team could win the cup, I feel this organization would be better off (in the long run) with a strong draft, and that includes one or two trades AT the draft. This is when Ken Holland and comppany must step up and be more active and creative.
