Game 6 Wings vs Ducks Game Day Updates

Dale MacMillan

Who's in, who's out, who's up, who's down, and who's playing with who.

Guess who's back?! Abby's back! Frk yeah!

The Dirt

Justin Abdelkader returns to the lineup tonight after serving a 2 game suspension for his hit on Toni Lydman in game 2. Abby said he felt more nervous watching games 3 and 4 than would have been playing, and he understands how nervous the fans feel watching the games.

Daniel (don't call me Danny anymore) Cleary has declared himself ready and able to play, and will remain in the lineup and on the 2nd line. Apparently it takes actual death to keep him out of the lineup.

"If you’re hurt you have to come out and if you’re just banged up you have to play,'' Babcock said. "That’s not a big deal, you just keep playing.''

Eaves will be the odd man out tonight to make room for Abby to return. Samuelsson will take Eaves' spot on the 4th line with Bertuzzi and Emmerton.

I was pretty irritated with Eaves being scratched, since he's been playing so well and making a big impact, but Babcock's reasoning now has me worried and a little scared. Why did he choose to sit Eaves?

"That's a real good question... He (Eaves) played good, does what he’s supposed to, runs over people and a real competitive guy. But because I know more insider information that I’m not sharing with you, I have to have other guys to cover up for other people just in case they can’t survive... But it makes no sense to me"

I don't really know what to make of that statement, but it sounds to me like Babcock is keeping Sammy and Bert in the lineup because he has concerns about a top 6 player "not surviving" and Sammy or Bert can fill in on the top 6 better than Eaves. I don't know... but what I do know is that my recently achieved zen is gone and I'm all kinds of nervous, excited, worried, and uncertain.

Lashoff is out tonight and Colaiacovo will replace him. Cola was my choice to replace him (over White) and how pissed, disappointed, stabby etc... is Ian White right now. Lashoff played, DeKeyer played, and now Splodey Bones himself is playing, all while Ian White sits on the sidelines. Ouch.

Colaiacovo was told on the plane ride back to Detroit after game 5, that he would play for Lashoff. Babcock said

"We didn’t move the puck ( in game 5). We struggled, in particular that pair (Lashoff and Jakub Kindl) a lot that game, opening shift and a number of other shifts. We weren’t good enough so we’re making a change.''

and when asked about Cola's lack of playing time, he said

"Lots of concern, just like the concern with had with Sammy and Bert, guys that have been out for a long time, yYou’re a pro, you’ve been practicing, here’s your opportunity, you can decide for yourself. If you’re mentally tough, it shouldn’t be an issue.''

Colaiacovo says he's more than excited

"I don’t know what the word is to use, I think excited is a small word. It’s real gratifying obviously. This is the biggest reason why I wanted to come here, to play at this time of the season for this team. It’s been tough watching, but I think the team has done a great job in getting us to this point. We’ve got a real good group in here, a real resilient group. It’s taken a lot of patience and hard work for me to get this opportunity and I just want to make the most of it tonight. It’s a game that’s really important to us. It’s do or die and there’s no better feeling than playing playoff hockey."

Jimmy Howard left practice early today, but Holland said he's fine and will play tonight. He took to the ice before the rest of the team, and Babcock said "We skated him early and gave him the boot"... Babcock said they want to keep him fresh for tonight and that Jimmy leaving early was planned. How tightly did you pucker when you read that first part?

It's not easy knowing you were largely responsible for allowing the game winning overtime goal in a playoff game, but Joakim Andersson knows he has to shake it off, learn from it, and be better tonight.

"I want to be a good defensive player and that was not a good defensive play. I was not very happy about that, but I can’t go home and cry about it. I’ve just got to focus on the next game and do better. I have to forget about that situation. I obviously have seen on video what happened. I should have done different. I’ve just got to play good again tomorrow."

A few players commented on all the traveling they're doing this series.

Kyle Quincey:

"The worst is going back from here to the Eastern. It's a four- or five-hour flight with a three-hour time change. You get on a plane at 9 in the morning, you get home, the next thing you know you get back to your place and where did the day go? You have dinner, which is really lunch, you're trying to get to sleep and you're supposed to play a game the next day. That's the toughest things I noticed. Coming this way isn't as bad."

Kronwall said having been through this many times before helps

"There's no doubt that helps. Any time experience with that helps. It's one of those things. It is what it is. You have to find your way through it. You can't think too much about it. We're here to play a game. That's what we're here for. It's three hours, right? (Traveling) this way, it's a lot easier to go to bed and things like that. No problem falling asleep. But going back home, you tend to go to bed around 10:30 or 11 so it's 8 o'clock here."

Babcock is all out of fucks to give though

"I think fatigue is just when you get soft between your ears, that's all that is. I don't know how you can't be checked at this time of the year, I don't care how many shifts you get. There's no sense talking about it. Would I rather me be traveling from Montreal to Ottawa? Yeah. But I'm not.''

Bourdreau doesn't think it's a factor yet.

"Not in round 1. If this was round 4, round 3 ... you play all year for this, if you're tired, then you're not the right guy. I don't anticipate fatigue being anything right now.''

Babcock analogies are great.

I didn’t think our team reacted very good in the first 10 minutes in Anaheim, I thought it was bad," Wingss coach Mike Babcock said. "I thought we had an unbelievable second period and the third period was up for grabs. We need to start better here tonight. We have to find a way. I explained to one of our kids it’s kind of like a lawnmower. You choke it, you start it, rev it, it takes a few minutes to get going. We don’t need to be a lawnmower we need to get that done in warmup. We need to be idling just perfect."
