Let's eliminate the shootout

I know we've seen some of Datsyuk's most datsyukian moves on the shootout but that is no justification for its continued existence. It's a cheap gimmick. Many GMs are talking about revamping overtime--Ken Holland for one, wants ten minutes of three on three, and I'm with him there. But then he suggests the shootout remain as a last resort. My question is "Why keep it there at all?" What did we do before the shootout? We had to suffer the indignity of--cover your ears young hockey fans--a tie! But somehow, the sport and its fanbase made it through decades of this veritable entertainment wasteland, occasionally seeing a TEAM GAME played by two teams comprising SIX players apiece on ice at any given time, whose combined skills were sometimes so evenly matched as to result in a game that ended with no obvious winner. Dear God. I don't even want to imagine it. I think ten minutes of three on three will produce a winner the vast majority of the time--when it doesn't, we can appreciate the elegance that is the 200x85 ft. chess match of the game we love.
