The one good thing about late July the year before the Olympics is that we get a little extra news to tide us over in these boring months.
Today we saw the unveiling of the lists of players who have been invited to Olympic orientation camps. For most of you, the country you'll be most interested in is the USA, what with you living here and all, and today they announced the players that would be attending camp in Arlington, VA at the end of August.
Of interest to all of us is that 3 Red Wings were invited to camp, one of whom is a virtual lock to make the team and could contend for a starting role while 2 other guys were surprises. Jimmy Howard was rewarded with his excellent season last year with an invite, and there are some people who believe that he should contend for the #1 job and start over Jonathan Quick. Regardless of whether he starts or not, Jimmy is likely to be in Sochi.
Two guys who got unexpected invites were Justin Abdelkader and Danny DeKeyser. Abby is getting noticed for his physical play and ability to play with Pavel Datsyuk on Detroit's top line, while DeKeyser is going to get a look as the former "best player in college hockey" and possible future star. I wouldn't expect either to actually make the team, but given the complete lack of depth on USA's blueline, DeKeyser stands an outside shot at being their #3 guy.
Congrats to Abby, DeKeyser and Jimmy on their invites.
