It's almost that time of year. The madness has started today with Dubnyk going to Nashville for Hendricks, and then Scrivens taking Dubnyk's place in Edmonton in exchange for a 3rd rounder. With that in mind, what kind of things might we see from the Wings?
Personally, I would like to see a scorer added. I know our biggest weakness right now appears to be on defense, but we just have a hard time putting the puck in the net.
I took a look at the standings and I think I have a trade that could be beneficial for both teams:
G - Jonas Gustavsson
C - Joakim Andersson
F - Thomas Vanek
It has been well documented that Vanek is likely to not return to the Island next season, unless they make a miraculous comeback and somehow prove to be a contender. With that in mind, I think they could look to get a couple parts to build with. They need goaltending help. Poulin is nice but he's still young and raw. Gus has proven he has the game. I'm willing to let him go because Mrazek has proven that he can be an NHL goaltender. I would throw Andy in there, as well, as an extra piece for NYI. He is a valuable asset here, but I think I would miss him least of all the young players.
I might add a caveat that I would be hesitant to do the deal without some sort of reasonable expectation of an extension for Vanek. Gustavsson is UFA this year, as is Vanek. Andy has one more year after this. I think I'd be willing to take the chance on Vanek leaving if it means we are in a better spot for the playoffs.
Further, let's remember that Bert, Cleary, Sammy, Alfie, and Quincey are likely all coming off the books next year. At a clip of over $14M. That's plenty to extend Vanek, resign Tatar, DeKeyser, and Sheahan to reasonable contracts, and have some left over to spend next summer on what is supposed to be a really nice free agent class.
Now....to the important bit. Do I think this will happen? Absolutely not. But it's nice to dream. And, just for loin-tingling evidence's sake, here's a visual representation of what the lineup could look like after the trade:
IMHO, that's 4 lines that you have to account for. This is, of course, assuming that everyone is, and remains, healthy. Which is a big 'if' at this point. But again....dreams.
So, with all that, post your favorite trade dreams. They can be unlikely, highly unlikely, impossible, or entirely reasonable. Ready, go!
