I brought this up in a thread awhile back and decided with a slow work day I would put the beginning pieces together. My goal is to come up with a "go to reference list" of Nicknames for the Wings players (and probably some of the more promising and/or well know prospects. I decided to leave off guys like Bert, Cleary, Sammy, Tootoo, Eaves, etc because with the exception of possibly Eaves I really do not expect to see them on the ice for the Wings any time soon if ever again so why waste the time and space. Before getting started there are a few rules I would like to propose for use in development of said fandom nicknames:
1. No nicknames where it is simply a shorter version of the person's name. Exceptions to this rule can be made (ex. Abby, Alfie, Z) but must be agreed upon by the overwhelming majority of participants.
2. Nothing too vulgar (stay with me here for a second). This does not mean colorful language is not allowed (see Shitbox). What it does mean is keep it at least a somewhat respectful level. I have certainly seen my share of, shall we say line stradling nicknames (or in my case callsigns).
3. The best nicknames never need a real explanation but if the nomination is something obscure or not obvious please provide a short reasoning.
Once the thread appears to have fizzled out and/or we have all the players covered I will complie and post the finalized list. So without further waiting here is the list of players I would like to start with (as always more can be added in the comments for sure) and my current knowledge (or lack there of) of fan nicknames I have seen/heard used:
Zetterberg - Z, Hank
Datsyuk - Pav, Pasha, Magic Man
Franzen - Mule, Dancing Nancy (the Mule's Alter Ego)
Nyquist - Goose
Weiss - Weisserman (blech)
Alfredsson - Alfie
Tatar - Tats, Tots, Sauce
Abdelkader - Abby, Piano Man
Andersson - Joker
Jarnkrok - Ironhook
Kronwall - Kroner
Ericsson - E, Riggy, Shitbox
DeKeyser - DDK, Soze
Howard - Howie
Gustavsson - Gus, Monster
