Who's on the tradeblock?

Which of our top 9 skaters gets moved?

Datsyuk, Zetterberg, Franzen - not going to go anywhere until they retire

Nyquist, Tatar, Sheahan - Lifers by every account so far unless they get greedy

Abdelkader, Miller, Glendening, Helm, Andersson - versatile, grinders, PKers

Weiss, Legwand, Alfredsson - The great unknowns

Jurco, Pulkkinen, Mantha - the future unknown

Ferraro, Callahan, Emmerton - blocked by better talent

I'm sure we can all assume Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and Franzen won't be moved...ever. Weiss is unlikely to be moved since it's in his contract. Nyquist is signed for next year already, so add him to the mix. So is Andersson and Jurco.

Abdelkader and Helm are too versatile and have friendly contracts for 2 more years after this one. Miller is vital to the PK and grind line as well as a friendly contract that has 2 more years. Glendening just extended for 3 years.

So there are 11 of 13 forward spots. While we’re at it, we need to be mindful, that Holland and Babcock will not stack the deck and run 4 scoring lines. There will always be some semblance of a grind line.

Legwand and Alfredsson are in questionable boats. I, for one, don’t view Alfredsson’s reduction in points as a major concern. He’s been very defensive responsible as the season pressed on which has hindered his offensive production. But I don’t see a roster spot for him because of the emergence of Nyquist, Tatar, and Jurco. Legwand is even harder to gauge. He’s a center. We desperately needed him when trading for him. But next year, if Weiss is healthy, he’s not a vital piece. He could be a valuable commodity, but not a vital one. I can easily think of scenarios with him on the roster and without him.

Tatar and Sheahan are both RFAs. I can’t think of a scenario where neither one re-signs. So there’s 13 forwards without Legwand and Alfredsson.

What about Mantha, Pulkkinen, Ferraro, Emmerton, and Callahan? Well, let’s start with the easy answer, of the non-FA, Mantha and Pulkkinen, they’ll be in GR regardless. As for the rest, if they re-sign (which all are RFAs), then they’ll also be in GR.

So based on the roster that we would have, our forward lines would look something like this:

Zetterberg – Datsyuk – Franzen

Tatar – Sheahan – Nyquist

Abdelkader – Weiss – Jurco

Miller – Helm – Glendening

Andersson

Not a bad lineup if you ask me. But that’s for next year? And wait…didn’t I mention trading someone???

Oh, right…at the beginning. Yup, we’ve got at least 2 more forwards in GR that will be pushing for playing time the following year, but if that’s our lineup for next year, who is gone after next year so that Pulkkinen and Mantha are no longer blocked (let alone Nestrasil, Frk, Nastasiuk, Campbell, and Athanasiou).

So assuming Tatar and Sheahan sign for longer than 1 year, Nyquist, Andersson, and Jurco will be the next ones up for new contracts. Again, all 3 will be RFAs. I’ll get to Andersson later, but I don’t see Nyquist or Jurco not being extended sometime between now and July of 2015.

So if Andersson is the only one gone, then there’s 1 spot open in the 2015-16 season for a forward. Can you say logjam?

So back to my orginal point again….someone(s) needs to be moved. Who will it be? Abdelkader, Andersson, Glendening, Helm, Jurco, Mantha, Miller, Pulkkinen, Tatar, or Nyquist.

My preference…Andersson (of course). But that doesn’t really help open a spot for Mantha or Pulkkinen in the future (nor will they be wanting to be a 13th forward next season anyways).

So I’m going to propose something a bit more controversial…

Trade Pulkkinen, Andersson, and Jurco this off season along with Kindl and Jensen but no draft picks.

Yep. 5 guys. 1 who’s ready now for NHL top 6 duty. And no, I don’t love it, but I see it as necessary. My trade targets are as follows:

Oliver Ekman-Larsson

Alex Goligoski

Kevin Shattenkirk

Slava Voynov

Hampus Lindholm

Cam Fowler

Tobias Enstrom

No, not all of them are worth all 5 guys. But they’re all guys that would step into the defense and make it better immediately and over the long term. Many are from teams that are losing a lot of players in the off-season and need to reload, or just need to reload because they suck.

By trading those 5, you’re committing to Mantha, Marchenko, Ouellet, and Frk as being your 2015+ stars. Losing Andersson opens up the chance for Ferraro or Callahan to earn a spot in camp but gives them a reason to re-sign, bolstering Grand Rapids with their presence if they don’t make the Wings roster. And it also gives you a reason to re-sign David Legwand to a 2-3 year deal. Giving you this lineup next year:

FORWARDS
Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($7.500m) / Justin Abdelkader ($1.800m)
Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Stephen Weiss ($4.900m) / David Legwand ($4.000m)
Tomas Tatar ($2.000m) / Riley Sheahan ($1.500m) / Gustav Nyquist ($0.950m)
Drew Miller ($1.350m) / Darren Helm ($2.125m) / Luke Glendening ($0.628m)
Mitchell Callahan ($0.605m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($4.250m)
Oliver Ekman-Larsson ($5.500m) / Danny DeKeyser ($2.300m)
Xavier Ouellet ($0.670m) / Brendan Smith ($1.263m)
Brian Lashoff ($0.725m) /

The following year they move Abdelkader and Miller giving you this lineup:

FORWARDS
Henrik Zetterberg ($6.083m) / Pavel Datsyuk ($7.500m) / Gustav Nyquist ($0.950m)
Johan Franzen ($3.955m) / Stephen Weiss ($4.900m) / David Legwand ($4.000m)
Tomas Tatar ($2.000m) / Riley Sheahan ($1.500m) / Anthony Mantha ($0.925m)
Landon Ferraro ($0.900m) / Darren Helm ($2.125m) / Luke Glendening ($0.628m)
Mitchell Callahan ($0.605m) /
DEFENSEMEN
Niklas Kronwall ($4.750m) / Jonathan Ericsson ($4.250m)
Oliver Ekman-Larsson ($5.500m) / Danny DeKeyser ($2.300m)
Brendan Smith ($1.263m) / Xavier Ouellet ($0.670m)
Alexei Marchenko ($0.667m) /

I don’t think it’s a necessity to sign Legwand. You could just as easily keep Jurco instead, but I think 2 of the 5 Griffins (Sheahan, Jurco, Pulkkinen, Tatar, Nyquist) HAVE to be moved in order to bring in a top flight defenseman. Re-signing Legwand is a smart move in hockey sense. He plays with an edge and I don’t mean tough-guy edge. I mean a peskiness, annoyance, feather ruffle type of edge. Yes, he’ll take his share of penalties which can be annoying, but having someone that you never know if they’re going to be dirty or not gives other teams pause and hesitation. I like it and find it a necessary evil. Franzen used to do that in a more subtle manner. If Sheahan started playing heavy, he’d be a lot like that. Glendening just isn’t big enough to scare guys like Gudas or Rupp or Murray.
