I put together this roster for the upcoming season; I think it's doable, but the Wings would have to get lucky with FA to land a few guys.
Zetterberg (6,083,333) / Datsyuk (7,500,000) / Hemsky (4,500,000)
Nyquist (950,000) / Weiss (4,900,000) / Franzen (3,954,545)
Tatar (1,250,000) / Sheahan (1,000,000) / Jurco (709,167)
Glendening (628,333) / Helm (2,125,000) / Abdelkader (1,800,000)
Andersson (732,500) / Miller (1,350,000)
Kronwall (4,750,000) / Ericsson (4,250,000)
DeKeyser (3,500,000) / Boyle (5,000,000)
Smith (1,262,500) / Stralman (3,000,000)
I think Boyle for a 1 year, $5 mil deal is pretty reasonable, and he immediately shores up our second pair/powerplay unit. A 1 year deal would be low risk, and allow Oullet/Backman/Marchenko another year to mature.
Stralman is a solid; if offensively unspectacular; defenseman, who I think would do well on a 3rd pairing with Smith. He's also a right handed shot, and would allow Smith the leeway to make those rushes we saw coming later in the season. I was thinking a 2 year deal, maybe 3, but no more than that.
I went with Hemsky because he's a fast player who can be had for under $5 mil a year. He's a left handed shot, but I think his speed would go well with the board play of Z and the nasty passing of Pav.
I also considered Iginla and Gaborik for Hemsky's spot; but at the rate he's scoring, the Kings are going to be hard-pressed to let Gaborik walk. I think he resigns there for $6.5 a year or so. Iginla would give us another right hand shot, but in the end I thought the speed of Hemsky would fit our system better than Iggy, although I wouldn't be upset if we landed either on a 1 year deal. Vrbata is another name that keeps coming up, which is intriguing. I think any of these guys is going to cost us in the $5-$6 mil a year range.
The roster above would give us just over $2.5 mil in cap space.
