With Florida looking to move it, this seems kind of like a great opportunity to finally get that cornerstone defenseman in Aaron Ekblad. He's projected to be a top blue-liner...and we (and about 23 other teams) need one. Let's face it, players like these are nearly impossible to come by via free agency. Chara is ancient. Players like Doughty, Keith and Karlsson are locked up for years. PK Subban will likely be locked up forever in the coming weeks, and the pipe dream of trading for Weber is just that...a dream.
Making a trade for that pick might be a near lock at a top D Man (an NHL ready one at that) on the cheap for years to come. But what will it cost? I doubt Florida will really want to trade with us. We're a division rival now, and I'm betting they don't want to move down to 15 from 1, but they are shopping so why not speculate. We do have a trade history with them after all...
As often as I decry the idea us unloading Franzen, this might actually be good fit for this deal. It will obviously also cost a younger good player, and maybe an upcoming prospect, plus a pick. What about Franzen, one of Tatar (sob) or Jurco, and a D prospect like Sproul or Oulette (Ekblad would be replacing them on the depth chart anyway). This is a steep cost, but thats the price you pay for a #1 pick and a cream of crop defenseman. It seems to satisfy the going rate for a pick like this. It also doesn't leave the cupboard bare at all. We still have Pulkkinen, Mantha and Frk coming up, we'll have two upcoming Dmen in two of Sproul, Oulette, and Backman, not to mention young Brendan Smith and Ekblad himself. It will also clear about 4 million in cap for us to replace Franzen with a Moulson type.
I think this is a winning scenario for both sides...and unlike most posters, I don't think I'm lowballing. What say you all?
To Florida: Franzen, Jurco, Sproul and DET's 1st pick (#15)
To Detroit: FLA's 1st pick (#1) to be used on Aaron Ekblad
