The year is 2019. Gas powered cars are becoming less and less prevalent, the iPhone 8 has just been released, and the Tigers, after winning the 2014 World Series, have been out of the playoffs for the last three seasons. And then there are the Red Wings. Pavel Datsyuk has since retired and is playing for CSKA Moscow in the KHL. Henrik Zetterberg is 38 years old, and has announced he will be retiring at the end of the season. Jimmy Howard, 35, has been run out of the city and now plays for the New York Islanders. Johan Franzen has been kept around the last three seasons despite declining production. Mike Babcock now coaches the Toronto Maple Leafs, and has been replaced by Jeff Blashill. So what does the rest of the roster look like? Well, theoretically, something like this barring any major trades or signings (unlikely under Holland).
Nyquist - Zetterberg - Mantha
Tatar - Sheahan - Jurco
Abdelkader - Helm - Pulkkinen
Franzen - Glendening - Callahan
DeKeyser - Sproul
Kronwall - Marachenko
Smith - Ericsson
If all of these prospects pan out to what they're supposed to be, this looks like a dangerous team, despite the lack of depth at center being concerning. Now, while obviously there will be some changes to the team, the core will probably look something like this.
