So I figured I would throw something completely outside the realm of the current conversations and see if an interesting conversation kicks up that does not involve Dan Cleary, Kyle Quincey, Mike Babcock or (for the most part) Ken Holland. Hypothetically speaking of course, let's just say that for whatever reason the Wings actually miss the playoffs this up coming season. Before you blast me in the comments for rooting for this to happen or anything, this is purely hypothetical. I am in no way advocating for the Wings to miss the playoffs. Let's also say they get incredibly luck and actually win the draft lottery. That's right folks, this is a Connor McDavid post. But this goes beyond "wouldn't it be cool if the Wings were in position to draft Connor McDavid".
Sure, the Wings would seemingly look awesome for the next 15 years with the likes of McDavid, Mantha, Mrazek, Nyquist, etc leading the Winged Wheel back to NHL dominance? But what if they did the unthinkable. What if they traded the coveted McDavid pick? Could they get close to a Lindros type haul for the young center? What if they do the absolutely insane (in some eyes) and draft Eichel over McDavid? It is not as crazy to think about when you look at it.
There is no doubt the Wings could absolutely use an absolute 1C prospect. But, how likely is it that Connor willingly subjects himself to the Wings development program (which some would argue moves prospects along at glacial speeds)? Even assuming he accepts another year in Erie (he will only be 18 by draft time afterall and Drouin did not see to have much of an issue) and he is anywhere near the player everyone says he is/will be then they are going to need to find room for him on the 2016-17 Opening Night roster. Do the Wings have it in them to do something like that, even for such a high end prospect? Would Eichel, who is 2 inches bigger than McDavid, reportedly plays a Wings buzz term 200ft game and is committed to college hockey at BU be a better choice for the Wings? I am not going to try and even guess what McD would garner in a trade assets other than to ask if they Wings system could even handle the influx without completely busting at the sides? Personally, I would take McD and not even think about it. Filling out 5/6 of their Top 6 in the not too distant future with McD, Mantha, Goose, Jurco, Larkin sounds like a whole lot of fun and wins to me. What say you?
