Quick Hits: Red Wings Strike Out In Free Agency

Quincey: "I'm back guys!" - Leon Halip

Yesterday was quite the letdown. Team USA could not topple Belgium in the World Cup, and the Wings could not sign a hockey player of significant quality if the life of the organization depended on it. Things have to improve from here on, right?

Red Wings News

Duff: Wings shut out in free agent frenzy | Windsor Star
Great article by Bob Duff. I am not as worried about the Wings going forward as I am about the present. Players like Sproul, Mantha, Ouellet, Mrazek, and Nyquist will hopefully develop into the next core group that will lead the Wings. But, these players, outside of Nyquist, are all a couple of years away from truly becoming stars in the NHL. I am not worried about the state of the Wings five years from now, but within the next three years, the final years of Pavel Datsyuk's tenure in Detroit. Those years I am very much worried about.

Red Wings re-sign Quincey for two years, $8.5M | ProHockeyTalk
Sometimes action is better than inaction. In this case, inaction would have been just splendid.

Detroit Red Wings sign young center Riley Sheahan to two-year, $1.9 million contract | MLive.com
Sheahan has a very reasonable cap hit of $950,000. DeKeyser and Tatar are the prominent RFA's that still have to be re-signed.

Detroit Red Wings sign goaltender Petr Mrazek to one-year contract extension | MLive.com
Mrazek still had one year left on his current contract, but, now he is signed through the 2015-16 season.

Red Wings sign Northville native and University of Michigan alum Kevin Porter - MiHockey

Porter is a center who played with the Buffalo Sabres and their AHL affiliate last season. He will most likely spend the season in Grand Rapids, unless he is called up when injuries occur.

NHL free agency 2014: Track all the July 1 signings here - SBNation.com
Here is a list of all of yesterday's signings.

Chicago signs Richards — one year, $2M — to solve 2C problem | ProHockeyTalk
Brad Richards is a very high-risk, high-reward signing by the Blackhawks. He could never get it going in New York, but he has proven in the past to be a star player. Chicago might have found themselves a steal here.

Niskanen, Orpik determined to prove contract critics wrong for Caps | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports
Brooks Orpik easily received the worst contract out of any player yesterday, and I always had a bad feeling about the seven-year deal which Niskanen was bound to, and did, receive. The Caps certainly wanted to make a statement yesterday, but the only thing that I took away from these two signings is that the they need a new GM.

NHL's biggest free agency winners and losers - Sportsnet.ca
No surprise here, the Red Wings were ranked as one of the losers.

Shooting for the Stars: Dallas inks Hemsky — three years, $12M | ProHockeyTalk
This would have been a perfect deal for the Wings. A three year deal with a $4 million cap hit for a top-6 forward that shoots right and can easily produce upwards of 60 points per game. That would have been exactly what we needed.

Jarome Iginla joins Avalanche with three-year, $16 million contract - CBSSports.com
You know times are bad when Iginla voluntarily chooses to play for the Avalanche.

Ryan Miller goes to the Canucks on a 3-year deal - SBNation.com

Most teams would love to have had Roberto Luongo, Cory Schneider, and now Ryan Miller as the goaltender of their team. Miller is certainly an upgrade over Lack and Markström.

Blues sign C Stastny to four-year, $28M contract | TSN
Stastny fills the Blues biggest need. The cap hit may be a bit on the high side ($7 million), but, the term is very reasonable. Good deal for the Blues.

Flames hand Deryk Engelland $8.7 million for reasons beyond human understanding | Puck Daddy - Yahoo Sports

Red Wings' fans, at least Holland did not do this.

Stars GM: ‘We’re putting hockey back on the map’ | ProHockeyTalk
Within a one year time span, Jim Nill has transformed the Dallas Stars. He has brought in Seguin, Spezza, and Hemsky, just to name a few, and has made the Stars a hot commodity once again.

Let's Go Red Wings!
