Brendan Smith scored the winning goal in Game 2.

Love him or hate him. He's not going anywhere. And, if the Red Wings are going to advance past the best team in hockey they're going to need the kids to do exactly what Smith did. Step up.

If I'm the Chicago Blackhawks, I don't think I'm worried yet. No need to panic, but maybe a tiny bit of concern. Chicago is still the better team, but man, the Wings took it to them. Detroit has planted a little, tiny seed of doubt in the back of Chicago's mind. Now it's up to the best players and the kids to water that seed and allow it to grow.

Biggest take away from Game 2? Confidence.

Now the Wings know they can beat the Hawks in a big game. They know they can do it on the road. The kids know what it takes and they weren't just along for the ride. Hell, they were driving the bus at times. Smith is only going to get more confident and better. Damien Brunner continues to score and lead the 3rd line. Jakub Kindl looks like a whole new player. The kids keep growing and the stars keep leading the charge. You couldn't ask for it any other way.

Jonathan Toews is already crying about the refs and the big, tough, mean Red Wings. Captain Serious isn't supposed to get rattled. Time to knock him around some more tonight. Get in his head. Take the Hawks off their game. We're the underdog, but we're not a typical underdog. We're an underdog with a rich Stanley Cup history with players that have been there and know what it takes.

Nothing to lose. Everything to gain. Chicago knows that. They know what the Wings can do. Let's turn up the heat some more and continue this unfathomable Western Conference farewell tour.

Well Game 1 certainly went exactly how we all planned, right?

Let's be honest. It was pretty bad. The Red Wings held their own and played a decent to solid 1st period. We were all thinking, "hey man! 1-1 tie, not too shabby. Wings can hang."

Oops.

It was a nightmare after that.

We knew the Red Wings were the inferior team heading into this thing and we sure as hell knew if they were going to win it wasn't going to be easy. That 4-1 score doesn't look good, but it could have been a lot worse. We've talked about the kids on this team gaining experience throughout the playoff run. Game 2 today is a perfect example.

Detroit got their asses kicked. Some of the youth -- including a player I may or may not be a fan of -- played downright awful. Shitty ass playoff games happen. How the kids bounce back today is going to be huge. You know Pav and Hank will be better. You know Jimmy will be Jimmy. What the Wings need is Smith & Co. to take it to the next level.

The Red Wings are not out of this. It's only one damn game. This team can play better and they will. Rome wasn't built in a day and playoff series aren't won in a single game. There's too much pride in that dressing room and too much leadership to let what happen on Wednesday happen again. The Wings' legs will be back. They'll play a heavy game. They'll get this series tied up at 1.

Here we go.

If you would have told me the Red Wings would be in the 2nd Round a few months ago, I wouldn't have believed you. Hell, if you would have told me a few weeks ago I wouldn't have believed you either. Yet here we are. Ready to for Game 1 against the best team in the league. It's quite the role reversal and it's pretty exciting.

I'm from the region of Hockeytown that was barely alive the last time the Wings missed the playoffs. Since I can remember, it's been Stanley Cup or bust. Long gone are the days of being the favorite. We all remember the seasons where the Red Wings were everyone's top pick. We remember the early round exits to the Oilers or Mighty Ducks or Kings or Flames. Well, now it's our turn to flip the playoffs upside down.

No one believes the Red Wings have a chance.

Puck Daddy? Blackhawks all the way.

Pro Hockey Talk? Chicago for everyone.

ESPN? Hawks, Hawks and more Hawks (Except for Linda Cohn because she's the best and the only on-air talent from the "World Wide Leader" that matters other than Randy Scott).

It's us against the world. The Wings enter this series with everything to gain and absolutely nothing to lose. The Blackhawks, on the other hand, have everything on the line. Detroit has already exceeded expectations. Chicago isn't even halfway to it's goal. We've thrown the term "house money" around here the last few days and that's exactly what Mike Babcock's team is playing with. Everything from here on out is icing on top of the cake.

Steal Game 1 and it's about to get real tense in the Windy City. It's our turn to play spoiler. It's Detroit's turn to be the scrappy team that could. It's all been building to this. The season has been a roller coaster full of giant ups and downs, but we must always remember… roller coasters are f*cking awesome. So strap in and get ready. This series is about to go from 0 to 120mph in 4 seconds or less. One last playoff battle with a division foe.

Time to give the Blackhawks hell.

This game is just about as close to being a Must Win without actually being one. If the Red Wings drop both home games and fall down 3 games to 1 in this series... welp... see you later. This series will be over. Mathematically speaking, there would still be a chance, but the odds would not be in Detroit's favor.

A few months ago, losing Abby to a 2 game suspension would have probably made a lot of people happy. He was "dragging" Pavs down and wasting his final seasons in Detroit. Fast forward to now and losing Abdelkader for 2 games is a pretty big blow to this team. The kid found a nice home on the top line with Tyler's Euro Twins. He filled the Tomas Holmstrom role on that line quite well. Not the master of tipping pucks, but he went to the net and he pissed some people off. The Wings will miss him. I'd take Bert and place him right in Abby's spot. If he can handle the abuse out front, let Bert loose. Other options we could see is Cleary moving up and some combination of Bert, Samuelsson and Tootoo rounding out the 2nd and 4th lines. Situations like this really make you miss Drew Miller.

Bottom line, this team needs to find a way to score some ugly goals and keep the puck out of it's own net. If they do that this series will be tied at 2 and it's a best of 3 starting out in Anahiem on Wednesday.

Win Game 2.

That's all the Wings have to do to. You get a split on the road as an underdog and you're golden. It sucks the Red Wings lost on Tuesday night, but it's not the end of the world. When's the last time these two franchises played a series that wasn't competitive and full of close games? The answer is never. You can even go back to the late 90s and the games were close. Sure the Wings swept, but some nights it took a Brendan Shanahan triple overtime goal to get the job done. Hell, you can even look at the Ducks 2003 sweep of the Wings. Two of those games went to OT and one was a triple overtime game as well. The fact of the matter is that whether the Wings win this series or not, these games are going to be heated and go down to the wire. If I'm Mike Babcock, I do anything and everything in my power to win this game. You head home with a split and you're in a great freakin' position.

Part of the power that Babcock has is adjusting his lineup. Rumors are out there that the Wings could see the return of Todd Bertuzzi tonight. I sure as hell hope so. Bert's size and ability are something this team could use against the Ducks. Put Bert with Pav and Hank. Put him with Eaves and Emmer. Put him with Flip and Mule. Just put him on the ice. Of course, that's not to say the lineup as is can't win Game 2. We saw the last four games of the season that the ability is there. Bertuzzi just makes them a better and deeper lineup.

It feels to me like the Red Wings are playing with house money right now. This season has been hell. Up and downs and up and downs and more ups and downs. Four straight wins to end the season has this team playing it's best hockey of the season and has given us fans one last up heading into the playoffs.

The Stanley Cup is without a doubt the ultimate goal, but after what we've been through, yeah, I'm just happy to be here. Now if the Wings win this series, I'm sure that tune with change, but at the moment I'm just enjoying the ride. The Wings are underdogs and playing a team we all hate. It's a new role for us. I just keep telling myself how big this series is in terms of the kids. Solid NHL postseason playing time for guys like Gustav Nyquist, Joakim Andersson, Brendan Smith and Danny DeKeyser. Hell, even Jakub Kindl, who isn't a kid but really hasn't gotten a sniff in the playoffs the last few years. What these players go through in the next two weeks is going to be huge for the Red Wings franchise for seasons to come. And, if they have success? Oh man, that's a giant ass cherry on top.

With all that said though… screw the Ducks. Screw them straight to hell. What better way for the kids to get a taste of the postseason than to beat a rival and show the rest of the league the Red Wings aren't dead yet. And it's not just the kids, you want an X factor in this series? I'll give you an X factor.

His name is James Tiberius Howard III.

He's ready. He's ready to steal a series. He's ready to shove it in the face of all those critics who overlooked his abilities because he's a Red Wings' goalie. He's ready to earn that contract. He's ready to become elite. Nicklas Lidstrom is gone. Brad Stuart and Brian Rafalski are gone. Detroit finished FIFTH (!) in goals against this season. No offense to the defense, but you can credit a whole hell of a lot of that to Howard. He finished the season locked into a zone. He's going to carry that into the playoffs and carry this team on his back.

Ladies and gentlemen, it's the postseason. Bring on the nerves. Bring on the aches. Bring on the pains. Bring on the joy and sorrow. The most exciting and excruciating time of the season beings tonight. We love it. We hate it. Why?

Because it's the Cup.

Ladies and gentlemen… this is it.

Time for the Red Wings to put up or shut up. One game and everything is on the line. It's as close to a game 7 as you can get without it actually being one. A win tonight against the Stars and the 21 season playoff streak is extended and the Wings have a chance to play for Lord Stanley's Cup.

Detroit is riding a three game winning streak into the game and has been playing some of their best hockey of the season. Johan Franzen is playing like the Mule of old. Pavel Datsyuk is Pavel Datsyuk. The kids have taken over the 3rd line. Patrick Eaves and the 4th line have been at their best lately. And, holy crap, was the penalty kill good last game. Cory Emmerton and company are getting shit done. Now is the best time for them to be clicking. Just don't stop now, please.

All the Red Wings really need is at least one point to guarantee a playoff spot. Get to overtime and you're in. Get two points and you have a chance to take the 7th seed and avoid the Blackhawks. There's also a chance that the Avalanche beat the Wild, which would give the Wings a playoff spot even if they lost tonight, but if we've learned anything over the last 21 seasons, the Avs suck, so don't count on them for anything.

Bottom line… Just win.
