Phase I - Check

It's a start anyway.... Hey Ryan, don't listen to any naysayers. You'd love Hockeytown!

The hit burned in the minds of the Detroit players, and on March 26th the following season, all hell broke loose. Darren McCarty attacked Lemieux in retaliation for the hit. He hit Lemieux with a right hook to the side of his head, continuing to hit him until he fell to the ice. In an effort to stave off the blows, Lemieux dropped to the ice and covered his head. McCarty didn't stop, though, and eventually kneed him in the head before officials ended the battle.

Mile High Hockey's Cheryl Bradley with a hilarious writeup of the infamous scene where McCarty and Lemieux agreed to fight at puck drop and then Lemieux turtled like a bitch because McCarty owned him. If you're wondering what a rivalry looks like because you weren't around to witness where this all came from, just read this and realize that this night was 15 years ago and stemmed from a game more than 16 years ago. Wings and Avs fans still tell this story completely differently and probably always will. THAT, my friends is what a rivalry does. When you go over to read, I recommend reading the comments as well. Don't fight with them, please. Just appreciate the level of hate and from where it's borne.

Parise wants to stay with the Devils

On the bright side, it appears as if he won't be heading to the Rangers.

Honestly the worst part about the whole Radulov situation isn't on the ice, it's that @JJfromKansas was right. Face to the palm.— Chris Burton (@predatweeter) June 6, 2012

Tee-hee!

Bryan Rufenach, Wings Prospect, Dies at 23.

I've never posted here at Wingin' but Bryan was a fellow 2011 graduate at Clarkson University, where I got to work with him, watch him play, but more importantly get to know him off the ice once and a while. Great kid, such a shame.

The Red Wings posted a statement from Nick Lidstrom and his wife earlier today. It's on their FB page as well as the first page when you visit the DRW site (redwings.nhl.com). Pretty awesome. He'll be greatly missed.

Dirk Hoag of SB Nation breaks down the surprising news with a look back at Nicklas Lidstrom's remarkable career, and by assessing what the Red Wings might do to replace the one-of-a-kind captain and player.

Some Lighthearted Lidstrom Commemoration

Bringing back J_Stone' fanpost where we all came up with Dave Sanford badass-Lidstrom-picture Motivational Posters. I still laugh at these.

Detroit Red Wings Schedule Press Conference with Nicklas Lidstrom for Thursday 11am

From the team's official site: "The Detroit Red Wings have scheduled a press conference for Thursday, May 31, 2012, beginning at 11:00 a.m. ET in the C.C. Olympia Club at Joe Louis Arena. Participants at tomorrow’s press conference will include Red Wings Executive Vice President & General Manager Ken Holland and team captain Nicklas Lidstrom." Hold onto your butts, folks. Tomorrow's going to be REALLY interesting. [Edit, Helene St. James of the Freep claims to have a source that says he's retiring.]
