First Stanley Cup Championship Game - 1894

For those who don't know, I'm a bit of a history geek and follow at least as many history twitters as hockey. Today in 1894, the first Stanley Cup Championship game was played. Follow the link for the full story from the American History Museum.

Doug Janik is re-assigned to Grand Rapids

Per the DRW tweet, Doug Janik has been re-assigned to Grand Rapids. I hope this means that TPH will be back on Saturday. Also, no practice for the team today.

Ty Conklin Clears Waivers, Should Start Tonight

Bob McKenzie Tweets that Detroit goaltender Ty Conklin cleared waivers as of noon EST today and should get the start tonight in net for the Red Wings against the New York Rangers.

Datsyuk: Because it's the Cup

Not a crazy fan of this campaign yet, but I really love the this one. God bless that man.

Don't Read if You Enjoy Sanity: Howard's Hurt, Conklin is Back

From The Production Line, Red Wings' goalie Jimmy Howard has injured his groin, prompting the Red Wings to use an emergency recall for Ty Conklin (meaning Conklin will not be subjected to waivers). [Edit: TSN's Bob McKenzie is reporting that Conklin has been put on re-entry waivers. MLive's Brendan Savage reports Holland calling Howard "Day-to-Day"] Things keep getting better and better, huh?

The wait is over, Alexander Radulov returning to the Preds

This morning, Radulov's Russian agent Yuri Nikolaev confirmed on the record that the Russian forward is indeed coming back to the NHL. In an exclusive with Pavel Lysenkov of Sovetsky Sport, Nikolaev said that "the matter has been resolved within the framework of the KHL Regulations. Alexander is leaving for Nashville." Let's all remember to boo the shithead anytime he touches the puck (assuming we play Nashville in the 1st round)

Darren Helm to Miss 4-6 Weeks with MCL Sprain

From Chuck Pleiness at RedWingsFront, the report out of Detroit is that Darren Helm suffered a 2nd-degree MCL sprain on Saturday night when he collided with San Jose's Dominic Moore in the third period. Helm is a big part of the Red Wings' penalty kill and a tough-to-play 3rd line center who had found success and chemistry with wingers Drew Miller and Justin Abdelkader. This would likely keep him out of the lineup until at least the 2nd round of the playoffs.

Red Wings Social Media Meet Up in NYC

The Wings are hosting a social media meet up for fans before the Wings/Rangers game next Wednesday. The event will be from 5:30PM-6:30PM at the NHL Store. I'll be driving down from Boston for the game and will be going to the event. If any WIIM readers are in NYC and/or going to the game they should stop by. Let's Go Red Wings.

Shawn Burr Foundation

If most Wings fans have not heard Burr has Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Though his sight you can donate money to help find a cure for not only Burr, but everyone else with this type of Cancer. Or if you are in the Detroit Area you can buy a ticket though the site or bring 10 dollars to Great Lakes Sports City Area (Fraser) and watch the DRW Alumni team play Burr's All-Star team. It starts at 4 p.m. on Saturday March 17th. If you can make it, there are cheek swabbing booths to see if you are a match for Shawn Burr or other people with this type of Cancer. By getting your cheek swabbed and being willing to be put into the bone marrow registry you could possibly save someone life. Hoping to see some Detroit WIIM people there. P.S. Burr is in good spirits and is ready to beat cancer again. Early Updates on the Radulov Situation

Puck Daddy's Dmitry Chesnokov is all over the Radulov news this morning, stating that wayward NHL future Conn-Smythe winner Alexander Radulov's KHL club Salavat Yulaev is not willing to terminate his KHL contract to allow him to return to the NHL this season. Salavat's season is over, but KHL contracts run until April 30th. As Chesnokov tweets, terminating Radulov's deal now would mean Salavat losing his rights if he ever returns to the KHL. Personally, this kind of feels like something the NHL figured would happen all along and was a big part of the reason they so happily signed off on his return. Now the KHL gets to look like the bad guy when it comes to upcoming CBA negotiations. [Update: Here is the Puck Daddy article from Chesnokov on the situation. Things aren't finalized just yet]
