Jets It Is

10 minutes after declaring my distaste for the Thrashers being renamed the Jets, reports surface saying they will be renamed the Jets. Go figure. A new logo is on the way, though. I hope it sticks to the same color scheme. I always liked it.

Wings release 2011-12 Schedule

The Red Wings have officially released their schedule for the upcoming season, and you can head on over to the official site for details. We'll have a breakdown of games to watch in a couple of days.

One More Defenseman Off Our List, Markov Resigns

Scratch Andrei Markov off the list of prospective Wings free agent defensemen targets. He's reportedly resigned with Montreal. Coincidentally, this means James Wisniewski is likely gone from the team.

Gut Feeling Says Lidstrom to Return

In lieu of a Quick Hits post this morning (absolutely nothing happens on Sundays in hockey, apparently), we have this small quote courtesy of Malik. "You know it’s the middle of June when even Expresssen’s Gunnar Nordstrom has to suggest that Nicklas Lidstrom will in fact return to play for the Wings this season based on gut feelings after meeting Lidstrom on Sunday. " From Nordstrom: "After meeting with Lidstrom here in Los Angeles on Sunday morning, I’m so confident that he’s going to continue that I will dare write it on SPORT-Expressen even if Lidas won’t dare say it himself. He will have a first meeting with his team’s GM, Ken Holland, today in Las Vegas. But I don’t see hindrances occurring which would prevent Lidstrom from continuing to play in the NHL." Hopefully they are right and we can live for one more season with Zetterberg adorning just an 'A' on his chest. Either way, we will know for sure before Wednesday according to reports.

The Two Outcomes of The New Jersey Devils Filing for Team-Elected Arbitration with Zach Parise

If you're interested in the workings of the CBA and the difficulty associated with being a GM and trying to juggle the makeup of a team against the individual personalities of 50 players and at least two different coaching staffs, you'll enjoy this read from In Lou We Trust's John Fischer. When the news first came out about the possibility of the Devils electing to take Parise to arbitration, I emailed John to ask him about some of the ins-and-outs about how it would effect the Devils and what his personal thoughts on the matter are. He was kind enough to explain to me New Jersey's cap situation and how he felt this situation would turn out. Head over to In Lou We Trust and give this one (as well as the comments) a read. It's a very good look into how the process works and what gamble a team is taking by electing to request arbitration with a star RFA.

Nashville Files for Arbitration With Weber

And so ends my dreams of Shea Weber in the winged wheel. Unless they get hit with a $10 million price tag, this should buy them enough time to hash out a mega deal that will make him a Predator for life. Unfortunately.

Rights to Erik Cole Available

Carolina is apparently shopping Erik Cole's rights after contract negotiations stalled out. A few people here have expressed interest in him. Anyone think the Wings might make a run at Cole? I doubt we trade for his negotiation rights, but what about on July 1st?

Joey Mac Likely Gone

This was in the final link I posted in this morning's Quick Hits, but I failed to mention it. Seemed deserving of its own post anyway. Joey Mac, our savior backup from last season, will likely not return to the Wings next season. Holland has said he will not offer a one-way contract to him and MacDonald will not sign a two-way contract. Per Khan: "If he doesn’t get [a one-way NHL contract], he’ll likely sign a one-year deal for $1 million with a Russian team."
