CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 1 - Blackhawks 2

It...doesn't look good.

The Red Wings lost on the road to the surging Blackhawks in a game that probably didn't have much business being so close. The Blackhawks thoroughly outskated Detroit and created many more high-quality scoring chances on their way to a 2-1 victory.

Both teams got three power plays and probably got away with the same level of crap. I don't feel that the refs had a negative effect, keeping the game flowing much better than the Wings did. Detroit did get a goal on their three chances and held the Blackhawks scoreless on their chances. Detroit outshot Chicago 32-29, but that doesn't tell the story of scoring chances.

Goalie Ratings

Jimmy Howard absolutely played better than Corey Crawford. Despite Crawford seeing more shots and having to make a handful of great saves himself, Howard was much more severely tested. To go along with the +1 in the head-to-head, Howard will get a +2 in the overall rating. This game could have very well been 4-1 or 5-1 if not for the goalie. Jimmy Howard was the reason the Wings had a chance to come back.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 3 - Sharks 2

I want to do "big arms!"

Detroit welcomed a recently-struggling San Jose team to the Joe Louis Arena for some early Sunday action. Despite the Sharks playing a very good game, they came up empty-handed to the Wings, who played that much better on their way to a 3-2 win.

I was not impressed with the refereeing standard in this game, as things which were called on one play were not on others. San Jose got four power play chances to Detroit's three and were able to score on one of theirs. Detroit's man-advantage unit did not look good in this game. There are times when they come up empty-handed despite good puck movement and shot selection; this was not one of those games. The Wings were again outshot in the 2nd period while winning the odd-numbered rounds. This time though, the 2nd period advantage (19-8) was enough to get the Sharks the overall advantage in shots 33-28.

Joey MacDonald had a stellar game. He played incredibly well in stopping no fewer than four high-percentage scoring opportunities. He was beaten on a bit of a fluky power play goal and on another one where the net-front scramble was just too much to overcome. Still, his overall performance and effect on this game will be a +2.5. MacDonald also handily outplayed Niemi on the other end to get a +1 head-to-head. I'm starting to get more and more happy that he's signed through next year.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 2 - Predators 1

Nashville Predators goalie Pekka Rinne (35), of Finland, watches the game-winning goal by Detroit Red Wings center Pavel Datsyuk go into the net with five seconds left on the clock during the third period of an NHL hockey game in Detroit, Friday, Feb. 17, 2012. (AP Photo/Carlos Osorio)

The Detroit Red Wings extended their home win streak to 22 consecutive games by defeating the Nashville Predators 2-1 in a playoff-intensity game, handing the Preds only their third regulation loss to the Central Division. Interestingly enough, all three of those losses came at the hands of the Red Wings. This was a highly-entertaining low-scoring game.

The refs let a lot of stuff go in the interest of keeping the game going. That very nearly cost the Red Wings when a flurry of activity (and obstruction) went down deep in the Nashville zone, leading to a 2-on-1 coming the other way. Neither team scored a power play goal, which benefited Detroit, as they only failed one time to causing the Nashville PP squad to fail twice. Detroit lost the 2nd period shot competition by one, but won the other two handily and came away with a 31-21 advantage.

Joey MacDonald had a hell of a game to limit the Predators to one goal, despite a good amount of scoring chances against him. Considering the overall, he had two big saves and had to deal with three different breakaway chances. His rebound control was good and he challenged shooters well. He still frightens me when he handles the puck, but I'm getting a bit calmer about it. The overall rating for Joey Mac will be +2. As well as Joey Mac played, I felt Pekka Rinne was slightly better. He was more involved and much better ending the Red Wings dump-and-chase game behind his own net. He had to make a lot more stops and many of them were front-of-the-net flurry shots. MacDonald will get a -1 in the head-to-head.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 3 - Stars 1

What a crowd.

21 consecutive home victories. No team has ever done that in the regular season. Detroit came out of the gate looking like they had all the motivation they needed to make it happen, jumping out to a 2-0 lead early. Dallas fought back, but the Wings were simply the better team on their way to a 3-1 victory.

Detroit earned three more power play chances than the Stars in this one and went 1-for-5 on them. They also held the Stars off the board in their chances. Even with the PP cooling down later, I felt the puck movement was more dangerous than it had been during earlier struggles. They do still need work with zone entries however, often falling victim to a stacked blue-line instead of dumping the puck in and retrieving it. Detroit outshot Dallas 37-21, winning the count on the clock in every period.

I was very sad to see Joey MacDonald lose the shutout late, since he played well enough to earn it. I don't think he had to make too much of a difference for the Wings, but he kept the door shut when the Wings got a bit complacent in the middle frame. Overall, I'm going to give MacDonald a +1.5 rating and a +1 in the head-to-head. Lehtonen was under siege in the first period and actually did a fair job in this game, but MacDonald was just better.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 4 - Flyers 3

Joey MacDonald prepares to take off enough gear to allow him to count to 20.

By now we all know what Detroit accomplished on Sunday night when they defeated the Philadelphia Flyers at the Joe Louis Arena. The Wings fell behind twice in this game after scoring the first goal, but were able to battle back and eventually take home the victory with some stifling third period defense. What's more important than the historical accomplishment though is earning two points.

The refs only gave two power plays the the Flyers, but the Wings were able to kill both of them. To complete the special teams' domination, the Wings scored twice on their five power play chances and again on a play shortly after the expiration of a penalty. Overall, the Flyers outshot the Wings 29-25.

Goalie Ratings

Neither goalie kept his save percentage above .900, as the game was mostly decided by the skaters. Joey MacDonald badly played a puck leading to a goal and he misplayed another rebound to help create another one in his net. I can't really say that Bobrovsky played any better on the other end though, as I do remember a couple of big saves by the Wings' netminder and none by Philly's. The head-to-head rating on the night will be even. On the overall rating, I feel MacDonald earns a -1.5 for the play. Detroit played better than Philly, this game probably shouldn't have been as close as it was.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 2 - Ducks 1 (SO)

It smells like forearm, Corey. Why did you ask?

Detroit won their 19th consecutive home game against the Anaheim Ducks thanks to some tough work in their own zone and a bit of luck on Friday night. It felt like Detroit got outplayed by the desperate Pacific Division team, but they were able to keep that all-important second goal out of their net and get to the skills competition where Todd Bertuzzi menaced the puck past Jonas Hiller for the game-winner.

The refs struggled to stay in control during this game and it certainly felt like they were running on an internal ledger to keep things even. The choppy officiating matched a level of choppy play that one might expect from these teams. It's hard to say who won the special teams battle here, as Detroit kept Anaheim 0-for-7 on the power paly, but also failed on all six of their chances, including an OT 5-on-3 that I'm hoping doesn't cost Detroit in a tiebreaker later on. Anaheim outshot Detroit 30-24, including 13-6 in a tight third period.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Joey MacDonald was the player of the game in this one. He was under siege through most of the game's 2nd half and the Ducks were pressuring him by running at him all night too (to the tune of two penalties against them and a waved-off goal for it). He won the head-to-head battle against Jonas Hiller and will get a +1 for that. On the overall, MacDonald played very well, but did have to be bailed out on sure goals by his teammates twice. I was very worried about how aggressively he was playing on the puck in the first and 2nd periods, but he calmed down and made the saves he had to. MacDonald will get a +2 overall.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 4 - Oilers 2

Jesus, Flip. Look creepier...

Detroit was able to snap out of their recent playing slump with a good effort against the Edmonton Oilers on Wednesday. Returning to the Joe Louis Arena to shoot for consecutive win number 18 on their home ice was enough to get Detroit a victory, even after losing the 2-0 lead they built in the first half of play. After Edmonton tied it, the Wings poured it back on and came away with the 4-2 victory.

The Oilers were given seven power play opportunities in this game thanks to some heroic work by the refs to give penalties randomly. Fortunately, the Wings could say they won the special teams battle for the first time in what feels like a month. The Oilers did get one on the power play, but 1-7 isn't nearly as bad as they had been lately. The Wings were also able to go 1-4 on their own power play chances with Johan Franzen scoring his 2nd PP goal in as many games. Overall, the Wings outshot the Oil 30-17. Nearly half of Edmonton's shots came in the third period.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Joey MacDonald gave up a breakaway goal (in what was basically a 2-on-0 rush) and a power play goal. Neither of these were soft. Unfortunately for him, the low number of shots his team allowed worked against him in the sv% department. Overall, I felt that MacDonald wasn't much of a factor in the game. He wasn't forced to keep Detroit in it nor was he the reason they had to score as many as they did. This will get MacDonald an even rating overall. In the head-to-head, I'm also going to make this one even. Khabibulin had a bigger workload and was forced to make more big saves, but he also struggled with rebound control much more and really should have had what turned into the game winner.

CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 1 - Coyotes 3

The best #13 playing in Phoenix on Monday night...

The Red Wings found themselves out-of-sync going up against a motivated Coyotes squad on Monday night and ended up losing the game because of it. Detroit was only able to get one goal by Mike Smith. I'm not sure that level of effort was the main problem (although it was one of them), but it felt like Detroit was over-thinking on choppy ice against a team like this. I mean, c'mon; Shane Doan is their captain. Are you really going to overthink?

Coming to the "Detroit lost the special teams battle" portion of the post, I feel it warrants mentioning that Detroit lost the special teams battle. They actually did score a power play goal on the night, which balanced nicely with the shorthanded one they gave up. Sadly, the Coyotes' power play game-winning goal upset the balance and tipped the scales in favor of Phoenix. The Wings outshot their foes 31-23 in the loss.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Joey MacDonald had a respectable game in net. Sure, he got deked out of his own net by Boyd Gordon, but that was on a breakaway. He actually did his usual backup thing in keeping Detroit in a game while they tried to figure out how to play hockey. I counted two big saves by MacDonald and no bad goals on the two he gave up. I'm not going to get down on the third-stringer for failing to steal a game from the opposition when the guys in front of him only score one, but he's going to get a -1 in the head-to-head battle thanks to Mike Smith making a much bigger difference than he did. However, Joey Mac will pull a +1 overall for his performance. He didn't steal the game, but he also probably kept Detroit close for longer than they had business being.
