Number of the Day
Number of the Day: 20
Well well well, the Number of the Day returns after a week off because I had entirely too much work to do and not nearly enough time. Apologies to those that were looking for it all week, hopefully won't happen again. Anywayyyyyy....
Today's number is 20, brought to you by THE HYPNOTOAD.
- The number of consecutive playoff appearances by the Red Wings. Ahhhh, that's so fun to say.
- Mickey Redmond wore #20 for the Red Wings. During his 317 games with the Red Wings, Mickey scored 177 goals and added 133 assists and used wood sticks, not those ridiculous composites.
- Drew Miller currently wears #20 for the Red Wings. Miller has become a fan favorite (except for a RWGDOTCOM podcaster who probably thinks he should be thrown into a fiery pit) for his work ethic, salt'n'pepper hair, overall play and superman ability (see above).
- The number of assists Darren Helm has this season. The number of total points Patrick Eaves has this season. The average TOI for Brian Rafalski this year. The number of power play assists for Henrik Zetterberg.
- Brent Gilchrist scored 20 goals with the Red Wings. Tomas Kopecky had 20 career assists in Detroit.

Number of the Day: 22
Today's number is 22, brought to you by Thompson's Teeth.
- The number of the great Brett Lebda. Lebda wore 22 in Detroit and scored a total of 18 goals and 50 assists. The Red Wings next game is against Lebda's current team, the Toronto Maple Leafs. Lebda has 1 goal and 3 assists this year for the Leafs and is a -14 in 40 games played...at $1,500,00.
- The number of goals Pavel Datsyuk has this season. Datsyuk's 22 goals is currently his lowest 2002-2003, but the 22 games he has missed from injury are the biggest contributing factor to this.
- Current Red Wing Mike Modano is 22nd all-time in points in the NHL with 1,373. The only active player above him is Mark Recchi. Former Red Wing Brendan Shanahan is 22nd all-time in PIMs with 2,489.
- Today's number is half of yesterday's number. Three cheers for division! (or...multiplication, depending on which way you look at it).
- Jeff Hancock's favorite Griffin, Brendan Smith, is 22 years young.
- Other Red Wings to wear 22, via redwings.nhl.com:

- Trivia Question: Which Red Wing is 22nd all-time in points scored for the Wings with 362? (Hint: It's cold in here)
Number of the Day: 44
Today's number is "44".
- Todd Bertuzzi currently wears a "44" on the back of his jersey, just as he did during his first stint with the Red Wings, with Vancouver, with Florida, and with the New York Islanders. Calgary (7) and Anaheim (4) were the only places where Bert didn't wear "44".
- Bertuzzi has scored 287 career goals and added 420 assists for a total of 707 points in 1,014 games played in the NHL. Bertuzzi's 287 career goals ties him with Larry Murphy on the all-time list. Bertuzzi has 34 regular season goals as a Red Wing. In the 2009-2010 season, Bert had 44 points for the Wings. Neat.
- Players that have worn "44" for the Red Wings, via redwings.nhl.com:
Glenn Merkosky, Gord Kruppke, Viacheslav Fetisov, Anders Eriksson, Yan Golubovsky, Mark Mowers, Todd Bertuzzi, Mark Hartigan, Aaron Downey, Todd Bertuzzi
- Aaron Downey is now the strength and conditioning coach for the Grand Rapids Griffins. Downey's most popular YouTube clip is his one-punch knockout of Jesse Boulerice. Downey played just 60 career games for the Red Wings but was a fan favorite for his willingness to throw down. A few of us saw him on the tour of JLA, he's an intimidating individual because of how fit he is.
- Norm Ullman, a former Red Wing, is 44th all-time in the NHL in goals with 490. Ullman played 13 seasons with the Red Wings and scored 324 of his 490 goals while with Detroit.
- Nicklas Lidstrom has 44 assists on the season. Dan Cleary is one goal/assist away from having 44 points on the season
- Trivia Question: Which two Red Wings' jersey numbers greater than 44 do you have to subtract to get Bertuzzi's jersey?

Number of the Day: 8
Today's number is 8. Quite a few awesome things related to the number 8 in Red Wings history.
- The Red Wings have two Stanley Cups coming in years ending with "8": 1998 and 2008.
- The number of Stanley Cups the two New York teams have won, 4 each.
- Igor Larionov "The Professor" wore number 8 for a long time in Detroit. Currently wearing the number is Justin Abdelkader.
- Starting with The Professor: Igor Larionov played 539 regular season games for the Red Wings and 929 total in the NHL and was part of the famous "Russian Five" in Detroit.. Known primarily as an assist man, Larionov only surpassed 20 goals twice in his NHL career. During his time in Detroit, Larionov scored 89 goals, but added 308 assists. Larionov won three Stanley Cups with the Red Wings. He won a pair of gold medals at the Olympics and four gold medals at the World Championships. Larionov was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 2008. Larionov scored this triple overtime goal for the Red Wings to win Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Carolina Hurricanes.
- Now to Abdelkader: Abdelkader has scored a total of 8 career goals, five of those coming this season. 11 of his 14 career assists have come in this season as well. Up until this season, Abdelkader had as many playoff goals as he did regular season goals (3). Abdelkader scored a goal in two consecutive games against the Penguins in the 2009 Stanley Cup Finals. However, this goal takes the cake as my favorite Abby goal. Abdelkader has attempted to take on the fighter role when necessary, but he's got a long way to go before he's feared for that. Abdelkader is perhaps best known for his game-winning goal against Boston College in 2007 that secured the NCAA title for Michigan State.
- Larionov's name has 8 characters, he also played 8 seasons in Detroit and 8 for CSKA Moscow.
- Steve Yzerman is 8th in the NHL in goals scored with 692. Gordie Howe is 8th all-time in assists with 1,049--that's a mere 996 more than Brett Lebda.
- Eighth all-time for the Red Wings in points? Pavel Datsyuk with 649 points. Pavel also is eighth in all-time GWG with 32.
- Manny Legace ranks 8th all-time in goaltender wins for the Red Wings with 112. Chris Osgood ranks 8th all-time (in players with 20+ GP) in save percentage with .905%.
- Eight is of course the number of arms on an octopus, the best of all cephalopods.
- Trivia question: Which players are tied for 8th all-time in games played for the Red Wings with 908?
Number of the Day: 59
Today's number is 59. Why you ask? Because I'm spelling something with the atomic symbols corresponding to the atomic numbers.
- The Montreal Canadiens won the 1959 Stanley Cup over the Toronto Maple Leafs in 5 games.
- No Red Wing has sported the number 59...yet. Hear that, Brendan Smith?
- As pictured, Chad LaRose wears 59 for the Hurricanes. LaRose is a product of the state of Michigan. Other players to wear 59: Michael Haley (NYI), Keith Aulie (TOR), Brad Staubitz (when he was with the Sharks), Rob Klinkhammer (CHI, awesome name) and Brandon Yip wore it last year for the Avalanche.
- The number of goals Dennis Polonich scored as a Red Wing.
- The number of assists Steve Yzerman had in the 1984-1985, 1986-1987, and 1995-1996 seasons. Pavel Datsyuk had 59 assists in the 2005-2006 season. Gordie Howe also had 59 assists in 1968-1969 season.
