How to Properly Pronounce Your Favorite Red Wings Player's Name

If you haven't seen the post over at Puck Daddy, Greg Wyshynski interviewed the YouTube Hockey Name guy.  He's become somewhat of a sensation posting some funny and sometimes not-so-correct pronunciations of NHL players.

Some of the funnier pronunciations after the jump.

Video of the Day: What Could Have Been

With news of Fabian Brunnstrom's signing still sending shockwaves through Red Wing nation, one couldn't help but be reminded of Ville Leino, the Wings' booby prize after they failed to land Brunnstrom the first time around.

When Johan Franzen went down early in the 2009-10 season with a torn ACL, many thought that Leino would thrive given the ice time with Henrik Zetterberg and fill the Mule's shoes adequately enough while Franzen recovered. Unfortunately, like when my daughter wears my running shoes, there was a lot of falling down and crying about being hurt rather than scoring goals.

However, the Leino era did 2 things for us: it allowed us to coin a term for the press box ("Leino Lounge") and he showed a glimpse of his skill with this very nice goal against the Blue Jackets. It's a shame that he couldn't live up to the expectations we had for him here in Detroit, but we wish him well going forward (pay no attention to my fingers crossed behind my back).

Video of the Day: Joe Louis Arena Rocks

There's been a lot of talk today about Joe Louis Arena and what its fate will be should the Red Wings build a new arena. So it seemed only fitting that today's video showcases what the Joe means to Wing fans. This is a video taken at the end of Game 6 of the 2008 Finals against the Penguins. I was in my living room going absolutely crazy celebrating yet another Stanley Cup, and can only imagine what it must have been like to experience that with thousands of other fans. I like this video because I lose myself in the euphoria of the crowd.

I've only been to the Joe for a Wing game twice in my life, but I know a lot of you have a ton of memories. So share with us; name your single favourite memory of the Joe, with bonus points being awarded to non-Stanley Cup winning experiences, because those just make the rest of us jealous. Bonus question: name a time when you desperately wanted to be at the Joe. For me, that would have been to celebrate Stevie's solo victory lap with the Cup in 1997. I would have loved to have been there for the entire celebration, but that lap was about Yzerman and the fans, and shedding years of disappointment and failures together.

Video of the Day - Not So Happy

It's Friday! (Hi J.J!).  We've got Jiri Hudler taking us into the weekend.  Last season, Hudler returned to the Red Wings from the KHL.  He did an interview with Fox Sports Detroit and discussed just who he missed most during his time in Russia.  Which brings me to me question for the weekend...which former Red Wings' player do you miss the most?  For me, it's Brendan Shanahan circa 1997 and 1998.  The man would hit you and then score a goal.  I even named my dog Shanny after him.

Video of the Day - Buckets

August 11's Video of the Day features the resident #11 on the Red Wings.  It's a Danny Cleary day today.  We take a trip back to the 2009 Western Conference semifinals against the Ducks.  Cleary scores the game-winning goal with 3 minutes remaining in game 7.  What an epic series, epic game, and epic clutch play by Buckets.

Which brings me to my question of the day...which current NHL team do you hate the most?  Sure we dislike the Avs, but that rivalry isn't exactly the same as it was 10 years ago.  For me, currently, it's the Ducks.  Some of the faces have changed, but the ugly mugs of Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry still remain.  I don't care if the Ducks are in first or last place.  I hope the Wings destroy and humiliate them every time they meet.

Video of the Day - Mr. Plow

Did you like that photo in the latest caption contest?  Well the Video of the Day shows us just exactly what was happening when that photo was taken.  Patrick Eaves blocks a shot on the PK and has trouble getting up.  The Red Wings are already down a man, so Niklas Kronwall takes it upon himself to help a teammate out.  Kronner shovels Eaves just over the blueline.  That's what I call teamwork.

Video of the Day - Gretzky vs Fedorov

NHL Network ran a replay of game 4 of the 1998 Stanley Cup Final today and it reminded not only how fun those teams in the late 90s were to watch, but how awesome of a hockey player Sergei Fedorov was.  I really wish he never left the Wings or he could have left the team on better terms.  I'll be the first to say that I am Pro-Fedorov and think that if his relationship with the club was repaired his no. 91 should hang from the rafters.  He was like the Pavel Datsyuk of the 90s in the sense that he had amazing offensive skill, yet was one of the best two way players in the game.  He could stop you from scoring and light the lamp on the same shift.  So in honor of today being the day Wayne Gretzky was traded from the Oilers to the Kings, our Video of the Day features Fedorov with a great backcheck to stop the Great One in the 1996 Stanley Cup playoffs.

Video of the Day - Smithsonian

We know Brendan Smith can pass the puck.  We know Brendan Smith can put up points from the blueline.  We know the kid can play defense.  But did you know he's willing to drop the gloves?  Smith had 4 fights last season with the Griffins to go along with his 12 goals and 20 assists.  Arguably his best fight from last season came against Blackhawks' prospect Kyle Beach of the Rockford IceHogs.  Smith and Beach dance for a bit before throwing some punches.  Make sure to take notice of the sick uppercut that Smith lays on Beach at the 44 second mark of the video.  The kid has all the tools to be the next elite defenseman for the Red Wings.
