Recap: Wings 3, Ducks 6

The Wings suffered their second loss in regulation of the season in Anaheim tonight, 6-3.

Neither former Red Wings players were in the Ducks lineup tonight due to injuries (Bertuzzi-concussion, Schneider-ankle). Even so, the Ducks were able to score six against Dominik Hasek on 35 shots.

Kris Draper scored another goal making it his fifth in five games, a career best. Interestingly, Hasek earned an assist on Draper's goal. Henrik Zetterberg also scored to extend his goal/game streak to four. Defensive newcomer Brian Rafalski also scored on the power play.

Staying out of the box was a big problem for Detroit and has been a problem thus far this season.

The Wings were called for 13 penalties, something Mike Babcock didn’t want to particularly address.

"It was an interesting game that way," he said. "There was a lot of calls and ... I mean, I can’t talk about that. You just get fined if you talk about it, so ... I thought we battled back. I thought we got ourselves in a good spot. It was unfortunate we turned the puck over there on the power play and they scored shorthanded – that was the difference in the game. Their goalie was outstanding, he really was. He gave them an opportunity tonight. I thought we competed pretty hard. I thought they were better than us right off the start, and then I thought we got better."

Tomas Holmstrom was sent to the penalty box an astounding five times tonight (the Wings had 13 total penalties). The Ducks' fifth goal happened while Homer was in the box.

"Today was a freak show," Holmstrom said. "There were lots of bad penalties. I was being crosschecked and hooked and tripped, and right away when I do something, I got called. That’s how I see it. I went to the box every time I did something.

"This game it seems everything we did they called us, and they could have taken their guys a lot of times, too. We got the calls against us a lot today. It was a bad loss for us."

Both teams played Sunday night and while the Wings handily defeated LA, the Ducks lost to Minnesota. It showed Monday night when the Ducks came out strong in an effort to redeem the previous night's performance.

"We were challenged from our performance (Sunday) and the response was indicative of this group when their backs are against the wall," Ducks coach Randy Carlyle said. "They find a way to at least give it their best and I thought tonight was a perfect example of them trying to do what they had to do and get back to some of the things that we've done to have success."
