Sopel to tryout with Wings

Defenseman Brent Sopel will tryout with the Detroit Red Wings during this week's main camp in Traverse City. Defenseman Jassen Cullimore and forward Aaron Downey were also invited, but I'm more intrigued by Sopel's presence.

The Wings don't really need to sign another player on the blueline as they have quite a few prospects ready and eager to make the jump to the NHL. However, Sopel would be a nice addition to the team.

He made $2.4 million last season so it's interesting to see that he'll be trying out for the Wings with the expectation of being the 6th or 7th defenseman. I agree with James Mirtle that it's a smart invite on the Wings part.

Kyle Quincey and Derek Meech are solid enough options for depth, but until Jakub Kindl settles in, there's little beyond that, and this is a team expected to contend for the Stanley Cup again this season.

Acquiring a capable veteran in who can fill-in on the power play in a pinch is a good idea (as long as you keep him far away from elite opposition), especially if you can walk away should he have a poor camp.

Feel free to vote in the poll below whether you like GM Ken Holland inviting Sopel to camp or not.
