Wings defeat Hurricanes, 3-1

New, comment

I apologize for the lack of a game day thread or much of a recap of the game. I've been recovering from my 10th knee surgery and today was my first day back in classes. It's been a bit rough and I don't really have the energy to blog during my few breaks and after a long, painful day.

I do want to pass onto you the recap of the game and beat reporter Bruce MacLeod's thoughts after the game.

Quick highlights:

- Ty Conklin started in net and made 27 saves for the win. MacLeod said he got the job done, but wasn't impressed by his positioning and play.

- Tomas Holmstrom scored his third goal of the season in as many games from the top of the crease with assists by Marian Hossa and Brian Rafalski.

- Nicklas Lidstrom also scored and Henrik Zetterberg scored an empty netter insurance goal.

- The Wings lost their season opener, but defeated Ottawa and Carolina on their home openers. Payback in a funky way?

The Wings head to the White House tomorrow afternoon for their ceremony. The GR Griffins are without Aaron Downey and Darren Helm as they will be in DC with the rest of the team.

Kyle Quincey was claimed off of waivers by the LA Kings, who were in need of solid defenseman even before Jack Johnson's shoulder injury that will cause him to miss 2-3 months of play. While I'm bummed to see him leave after his play in the 2006-2007 playoffs when Schneider and Kronner went down with injuries, he wouldn't have gotten much playing time with the Wings and he is a NHL caliber defenseman so at least this way he finally got a roster spot on the NHL team. Oh, has anyone else noticed a lot of the reports and even the NHL news announcement spelled his last name as Quincy without the 'e'? Interesting...
