After dropping the opener in heartbreak fashion, allowing three straight goals, the Red Wings will look to even up the series in Stockholm today. The defense got complacent following the 3-1 lead and allowed Paul Kariya to score twice. The Red Wings outshot the Blues but were forced largely to a poor selection of shots, paired with a great performance by St. Louis goalie Chris Mason.
Game 2 should be a better indicator of this team as both St. Louis and Detroit are still getting into the flow of the season. I expect the defense to play better today, even with the possibility of Jonathan Ericsson being out of the line-up from a foot injury. The offense was good yesterday but still lacked the positioning of a team in full form. Henrik Zetterberg, Todd Bertuzzi, and Dan Cleary were all noticeably a step behind and out of sync following preseason groin injuries. Pavel Datsyuk showed some great signs yesterday and hopefully he's back to being completely healthy; ready to distribute the puck to Johan Franzen and Tomas Holmstrom.
Babcock has yet to say if Jimmy Howard or Chris Osgood will get the start and Ericsson's status is still uncertain. Game time decision on Ericsson is expected and Osgood is likely to start.
Puck drops at 3:00 p.m. ET and will be aired on NHL Network, CBC, and FS-MW.
