Electrifying center Darren Helm will have to wait a bit to make his 2009-2010 season debut for Detroit. Helm suffered a sprain to the AC joint in his right shoulder after he tripped over a stick during a training camp session and slid into the boards.
MLive.com's Ansar Khan has the full scoop on the story, here's a quick bit from it:
General manager Ken Holland said Helm will miss the entire preseason and is doubtful for the season-opening games Oct. 2-3 against the St. Louis Blues in Stockholm, Sweden.
Is it an unfortunate injury? Yeah. Is it crippling? Heck no. Abdelkader will fill the role temporarily and it's a great opportunity to get him some playing time early in the season. When Helm's back healthy, he'll more than likely be put right back in the line-up.
As his rehab continues, we'll update you on this.
