I've been meaning to get some more Grand Rapids Griffins coverage on here this season but with school and work, things got a little sidetracked. I'm hoping to make this a bi-weekly feature to keep people up to date on the Red Wings' AHL affiliate and how certain players are doing this season on the West end of I-96.
Current/former Red Wings:
Jakub Kindl was sent down to Grand Rapids for a conditioning stint and in his 7 games played, he's tallied a goal and two assists to go with a -4. Despite spending some time in Detroit while Chris Osgood was out with a groin injury, Joey MacDonald leads the team in wins (6), GAA (2.45) and SV% (.896). Doug Janik has played in 25 games and has added 3 goals and 4 assists after spending some time in Detroit while Jonathan Ericsson and Brian Rafalski were out. Derek Meech has had a decent year so far in Grand Rapids, sporting a +11 to go with his 5 goals and 9 assists.
Standings, game results and scoring leaders after the jump.
ALSO, if any of you are regulars at Griffins' games and keep up with the team on a frequent basis and would like to try your hand at this posting series, by all means shoot me an e-mail.
In the North Division of the Western Conference, the Griffins sit tied for last with the Rochester Americans at 31 points. Nine points separate the top (Hamilton) from the bottom (GR/Rochester) and the Griffins going 4-5-1 in their last 10 contests hasn't helped them in the standings at all. They'll get a few divisional games in their schedule that might help them take points and move up.

Past five games:
In their last five games, the Griffins have faced the Peoria Rivermen three times and have dropped all three. The first game on December 11, the Griffins lost 3-2. The Griffins then hosted the Texas Stars the following night and won 4-2, avenging a 4-3 loss on December 10. On the 15th, the Griffins downed the Houston Aeros 5-2 before heading into the weekend set against the Rivermen and dropping both games, 2-5 at home and 1-2 on the road.
When we had Ilari Filppula on TP:60 we asked him about the scoring race with Tatar. Tatar still maintains the lead with 24 points (8 G, 16 A) but Ilari is close behind with 23 points (10 G, 13 A) and Francis Pare has caught Ilari by chipping in 9 goals and 14 assists. Up-and-coming Red Wing defenseman Brendan Smith has 19 points on the season and is continuing to show that offensive success he had at the collegiate level.
Below are the top 10 in points for the Griffins, full stats here.
As mentioned before, Joey MacDonald has lead the team in wins, GAA and SV%. Thomas McCollum has a 5-10-2 record with a 3.12 GAA and .884 SV%.
The Griffins take on the Toronto Marlies at home on Wednesday (Dec. 22). The Marlies are three points ahead of the Griffins at the moment in the North Division so the Griffins could definitely use those two points. They get a crack at another divisional opponent at home on December 26 as they face the Lake Erie Monsters, who currently sit two points in front of them. They close out the year 2010 with a game at Chicago on the 27th and then a home contest against the Marlies on the 31st.
