Weekend Links & Open Thread

Detroit goes to Toronto this evening to finish the preseason home-and-home with the Leafs. Clarke MacArthur's disciplinary hearing is at noon today, so we'll know early whether he'll be allowed to suit up.

It's October 1 already. Hockey is closer than Tomas Holmstrom's ass is to a goalie's face.

Red Wings vs. Maple Leafs - 10/01/2011 - Detroit Red Wings - Preview
Here's a look at which players should be dressing tonight.

Red Wings Front | Postgame Quotes
Babcock was less-than-thrilled about his team giving up 4 goals on 20 shots. Jimmy Howard says that sometimes he's his own worst critic (meaning he's going to have to be pretty hard on himself after last night's performance to keep that title). Also more from Babcock and Abdelkader about the MacArthur hit.

Detroit Red Wings - NHL | Red Wings admit they're not ready to start season | The Detroit News
Hey, alright. The platitudes about knowing they have to perform better have started already. Hockey's back, baby!

Ian White doesn't miss Wilson | Maple Leafs | Hockey | Toronto Sun
Ian White is trying really hard not to say anything impolite about the way that Ron Wilson treated him while he was in Toronto (often making him a healthy scratch). It's a bit like the Babcock/Commodore thing, except I respect Babcock's opinion more than Ron Wilson's.

Elsewhere Around the League

Taylor Fedun Injury Video and Discussion - Hockey Wilderness
HW has the video of the incident last night which ended up in a guy fighting for a spot on the Oilers a compound fracture of his femur. Just know that if the Mursak replay made you uncomfortable, this will too. It's an unfortunate happenstance, but not an instance of reckless or dangerous play. The touch-icing rule is going to face the toughest scrutiny after this accident.

Photoshop Thread - Mile High Hockey
MHH has also been running photo caption contests (technically, they started first), but now they're upping the ante with a photoshop thread. Check out the example links too, especially Example 2 if you're a fan of Michigan college athletics.

Veteran G Manny Legace signs PTO with Rampage - Litter Box Cats
Legace has a tryout contract with the Florida Panthers' minor-league affiliate the San Antonio Rampage. Good luck to him. Did you know he's 38? I didn't know goalies aged.

The Hockey News: Ryan Kennedy's Column: Kennedy: Even players agree with Shanahan's crackdown
While Martin Brodeur bitches about suspensions somehow giving the league a bigger black eye than losing players to concussions, Brad Boyes (who was suspended 2 games for a head shot) doesn't seem to have the same problem with the new discipline policy and procedures. Good on him for it.

The NHL's Most Interesting Name: Wrapping Up the 1940s - Arctic Ice Hockey
I'd definitely go to a bar with a guy named Peanuts O'Flaherty. We'd probably end up getting into a row with Baz Bastien and somebody'd end up with a cauliflower ear.
