Morning Skate: Say "no" to San Jo

The Red Wings went into Anaheim last night and struggled on the power play, going 1-for-9 on the night. The Wings couldn't get all that many shots on goal against the Ducks and to give credit where credit is due, the Ducks played very tight defense. Can the Wings get rid of the stink of losing to the Ducks by a penalty shot in OT?

Finishing up this trip to Californ-i-a, Mike Babcock takes his team to San Jose to face the Sharks. The Sharks have won seven straight games and 12 of their last 14. They've definitely turned things up and are playing well of late. However, Wings fans might take some solace that the last four wins four San Jose have been one goal games (including the last time these teams met) and three of those wins were in OT, two of those OT were in the SO.

Fear The Fin is your SB Nation Sharks page. Make sure you keep it classy.

!! ONLY TWO GAMES REMAIN FOR H2H2 PLEDGES !!

  • Joey MacDonald will start in net tonight against the Sharks. In his last outing, Joey Mac helped the Wings to a shootout win over the Buffalo Sabres. He's won two straight decisions and will go for #3 tonight against the Sharks. It will be considerably tougher than wins against the Sabres and Panthers but Mac has played pretty well lately.
  • Not sure if Antti Niemi will start in net tonight (very likely) but the Sharks just gave him a new four-year $15.2 million deal. Did they overpay for him or is it about? (I say overpaid, but not by too much).
  • Logan Couture got high-stuck twice in a row last game. Let's see if his face stays out of the way of sticks tonight.
  • Stay out of the box, por favor. The Sharks have a very good power play unit and the Wings need to give them as few chances as possible and that will also help any fatigue from playing last night not shine through.
  • Thanks to all those that wished me a "get well" message in last night's thread. Those, coupled with medicine, have me feeling a little better this morning. If only I weren't looking at OTL from last night...
  • Tonight's game is a battle between two top-five faceoff teams and considering that both teams like to play "puck possession" hockey, this could be crucial to the outcome of the game.
  • Score Prediction: 4-3 Detroit. I think the Wings fall behind early but rally in the second and third periods to take the game. But of course, don't listen to me, I never get it right.
  • Player of the Game Prediction: Justin Abdelkader. Since I never get this right, why the hell not?
  • For Discussion: Trevor Gillies had another dangerous play last night, just after returning to action after a 9-game suspension. Does the NHL need to get rid of players like this or is it something that's too difficult to really crack down on?
