Kris Draper to Retire?

New, comments

An interesting photo caption appeared on the Red Wings website for Kris Draper dated for tomorrow, July 26th. The picture, which can be found here, is of Draper waiting to embrace Henrik Zetterberg after a goal against the Anaheim Ducks.  While there's nothing inherently noticeable about what's in the pic itself (although it is a great capture), the caption is very interesting:

After 1,157 games and four Stanley Cup championships, Kris Draper announced his retirement during a press conference on July 26, 2011.

I think it's safe to say that Kris Draper's hockey career is over. Many have suspected this for some time, since the signing of forward depth has left no roster space open for the aging center and veteran presence. We'll look forward to seeing what role he'll be taking with the organization from this point forward. He's much too valuable a person to not keep around.

Thank you for all you've done for Hockeytown, Kris Draper.

[Update: The link to the picture on the Wings' website is now broken]

[Update #2: Ansar Khan on MLive confirms an 11am press conference with Draper tomorrow]
