Quick Hits: First Win of the Season is First Untelevised Game of Season

New, comments
  • You can read a recap of the game last night courtesy of Anthony Fenech. [Detroit Free Press]
  • Ansar Khan writes that Jakub Kindl faces an upward battle winning that 6th defenseman spot over Mike Commodore, but I don't think I agree.  Everything I have seen and heard says that it is his spot to lose. [MLive]
  • Petrella points out an issue with our preseason roster - why the hell is Tomas Jurco on it still?  Is Jurco closer to making the team than anyone thinks?  It would appear so. [The Production Line]
  • Helene St. James says Darren Helm is better than he thinks he is and has the talent to be an offensive star in this league. [Detroit Free Press]
  • Sara Neuie has been posting pictures from the preseason. [Neuie Perspective]
  • As was pointed out in the FanShots yesterday, the Stars have signed former Red Wing Mike Modano to a 1 day contract so that he can retire a Star.  Good move by the Stars, in my opinion. [Defending Big D]
  • A lot of people, including Matt Saler of On The Wings, is not happy with the Modano signing.  I don't understand the big deal; the Stars did to him exactly what we did to Kris Draper, Kirk Maltby, Chris Osgood and will likely do to Tomas Holmstrom next summer.  He thought he had another year left and they didn't.  If Ozzy had done that, we would have welcomed him back with open arms with a 1 day contract to retire a Wing.  It's a great gesture by the Stars franchise and I greatly look forward to watching his #9 slowly ascend to the rafters of the American Airlines Center where it belongs. [On the Wings]
  • Brendan Shanahan dolled out his first suspensions yesterday in a very monotone voice.  Jody Shelley was given 10 games for his awful hit on Darryl Broyce and Pierre-Luc Letourneau-Leblond was given 5 games for his hit on Matt Clackson, and already the hockey community believes that Shanahan was the right man for the job. [Puck Daddy on Shelley - Puck Daddy on Lebtoneau-Leblond]
  • Moneyball in the NHL?  Well, that just might be the Nashville Predators. [On The Forecheck]
  • This could have huge, and good, repercussions in the sports world.  The FCC has ruled that Rangers, Devils, and Islanders games must be broadcast in HD by providers not named Cablevision.  Sounds like MSG was trying to create an unfair advantage and this could be a huge decision for sports broadcasting. [Puck The Media]
  • Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki is out 12 weeks after hip surgery. [TSN]
  • Detroit ranks in the bottom half of the league in average height and weight.  Who is tops?  The Colorado Avalanche.  Great. [Mile High Hockey]

Discussion of the Day: We have two discussion points this morning.  Did Shanahan make the right call with his suspensions for Shelley and Letourneau-Leblond and was the one day contract for Modano a good move by the Stars?
