Detroit's first signing of the the 2012 free agency period is back-up goalie Jonas Gustavsson. The 6'3" goaltender spent all three of his NHL seasons with the Maple Leafs in a back-up role. His deal is reportedly worth $3 million over 2 years. Giving the Wings a 1.5M cap hit for their back-up.
His numbers aren't really that impressive, but he'll be playing in front of -- what we hope -- is a better defensive group than he say in Toronto. He's 39-45-0 in his career with a 2.98 GAA and .900 SV% along with 5 shutouts.
This means Joey MacDonald will be headed to Grand Rapids. The team wasn't sure how his back injury was going to hold up this season and needed some insurance. It's a good deal for the Wings. $1.5M is not a bad cap hit by any means and if the Monster bombs, well, the money isn't going to crush the team. It's pretty much the going rate we've see for back-up goalies these days too.
