So today the league and players are together trying to pretend that they're interested in getting a deal done before midnight on Saturday to prevent yet another work stoppage. The players met to finalize their latest proposal, which was delivered to the league and countered with a league proposal before talks broke off. They may not actually be any closer to a deal, but a long set of talks today at least feels a bit better.
Oh, and Ian White said something really stupid today.
"Why would there be any sympathy for us, or for them (owners)?'' White said. "We just want our fair share. We're the workforce and we're the product. Maybe we should get two-thirds of the pie. ... We just want a fair piece and don't want to get taken advantage of.''
(emphasis mine)
It's part of a big article about how badly the players feel for the fans who are getting jerked around here, and I agree with the sentiment that the players want a fair piece and don't want to get taken advantage of.
But two-thirds of the pie in real talk is a 9% increase of the players' share. Ian White basically said "Maybe instead of the $370M pay cut they're offering, we should get $297M MORE!"
In the same interview where he said he feels badly for the fans and doesn't expect sympathy, he spouts off this garbage. I know it's just an oversimplified piece and of course I'm reading too much into this, but it makes it hard to keep up the idea about how much more the players care about the feelings of the fans and the overall welfare of the league when you read this dumb shit come out of a player's mouth.
