Game Day Updates: Senators at Red Wings

Breaking News: Franzen enjoys scoring on Senators
Phillip MacCallum

There was some scary stuff that happened in practice today.

  • Darren Helm skated today and left practice early again. The good news is that his groin soreness isn't serious enough to keep him off the ice, the sad news is that it wasn't good enough to allow him to practice today. Which may have been a blessing in disguise, because apparently there was a demolition derby on the ice.

  • Kronwall left the ice after being hit in the mouth with a puck. No word yet who has it out for him, but the puck rolled up his stick, hit him in the mouth, and made him bleed his own blood. He had blood in his beard, got a couple teeth knocked loose, needed stitches, and is a game time decision. He'll be seeing the dentist this afternoon.

I swear it seems like we've had more injuries from practices than we have from games. Who's running these things, Tyler Durden?

  • Xavier Ouellet was recalled from Grand Rapids (again) this afternoon, in case Kronwall doesn't play. Even if Kronwall does play, with Ericsson out, the Wings only had 6 defensemen on the roster and typically like to have 7, just in case. Ouellet is getting familiar with the drive between Grand Rapids and Detroit, and I'm really really really REALLY ok with that. He's a very special player.

On defense tonight, Brendan Smith will be paired with Niklas Kronwall. If Kronwall doesn't play, I expect to see the same pairings we did against San Jose. The lines should look like this:

Forwards
Henrik Zetterberg Pavel Datsyuk Justin Abdelkader
Todd Bertuzzi Johan Franzen Daniel Alfredsson
Daniel Cleary Stephen Weiss Tomas Tatar
Drew Miller Joakim Andersson Jordin Tootoo

Defense
Niklas Kronwall Brendan Smith
Kyle Quincey Danny DeKeyser
Brian Lashoff Jakub Kindl

Goalies
Jimmy Howard
Jonas Gustavsson

Fun Facts and Stats:

-Xavier Ouellet, who made his NHL debut on 10/21 against the Sharks, is the youngest defenseman (20 years, 3 months, 14 days) to debut for the Wings since Jiri Fischer (19 years, 2 months, 14 days).

-In 10 games this season, Justin Abdelkader only has 2 penalty minutes. He has also drawn the second highest even strength penalties per 60 minutes played (2.1), of any player on the team. Considering he's playing top line (2nd line for a few games), is a physical player, and gets under people's skin, that's pretty impressive. It also puts him on pace for 16.4 PIM over 82 games (small sample size, I know).

-Jordin Tootoo has the highest even strength penalties drawn per 60 minutes played (4.6) of any Wings player, and has not taken a single penalty in 5 games played. Smooch our fart holes Nashville.

-The only Red Wing who has played as many games as Abdelkader (10) and has fewer PIM, is Joakim Andersson( 0 PIM); who also happens to lead the Wings in short handed time on ice.

-The last time a Detroit player scored 5 goals was Johan Franzen at Ottawa on February 2, 2011.

-Danny DeKeyser leads all Wings defensemen in shots on goal with 16, which is also 6th best on the team.

Bonus:

There were a couple of tweets from the Alfredsson/Ottawa saga that I actually laughed at...

From the Ottawa Camp:

This tweet made me laugh. Hey, all Swedes look alike right? I kid, I kid.

The Ottawa lineup will be:

Forwards
Milan Michalek Jason Spezza Cory Conacher
Clarke MacArthur Kyle Turris Bobby Ryan
Colin Greening Zack Smith Chris Neil
Derek Grant Mika Zibanejad Erik Condra

Defense
Erik Karlsson Marc Methot
Chris Phillips Eric Gryba
Jared Cowen Joe Corvo

Goalies
Craig Anderson
Robin Lehner

Let's Go Red Wings!!!
