CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 2 - Rangers 3 (OT)

Leon Halip

That sucked

The Wings allowed 40 shots. Brutal performance in this one.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Box score here

Jimmy Howard kept the Wings in this game with some amazing saves and it sucks they can't get him the kind of support he deserves.

The Goals

1st Period 17:12 - Detroit Goal: Drew Miller (wrist shot) from Joakim Andersson and Danny DeKeyser
The Wings get on the board first on an odd-man rush goal. The Rangers cross Detroit's blue line and try to get it into the middle of the ice. A pass from Zuccarello bounces off of DeKeyser's stick, then off Andersson's skate and back out of the zone where Miller turns it up ice on the left wing side with Tootoo joining him in a 2-on-1 against Marc Staal. Miller keeps good positioning the entire way on keeping the goalie honest and his passing option open before snapping it through the short side from just inside the dot. DeKeyser will get a half-plus on a well-positioned stick.

2nd Period 17:20 - New York Goal (PP): Benoit Pouliot (backhand) from Brian Boyle and Ryan McDonagh
The Rangers pull even on the power play thanks to some crease-crashing ugliness, the kind you need to score PP goals sometimes. The Rangers do a good job to out-man the PKers in the corner of the zone and free it to get a shot off from the top of the circle. J.T. Miller's shot rings off Kronwall's skate out front, knocking him over and going right to McDonagh, who carries it to the extreme angle on Jimmy's left before tossing it back into the crease where Boyle sits. Howard stops Boyle's stuff attempt, but Pouliot comes in on the back door and jams it in. It's kind of a lucky bounce off Kronner's skate here, but Andersson is turned the wrong way when Pouliot gets the puck. Jester's job is this back door coverage while Lashoff is fighting Boyle. It's a tough call, considering Boyle already got a shot off despite Lashoff trying to cover him, but this mistake will earn Andersson a half-minus.

2nd Period 19:49 - Detroit Goal (PP): Daniel Alfresson (slap shot) from Pavel Datsyuk
Alfie puts the Wings ahead with 11 seconds left in the 2nd period on a great feed from Datsyuk to the middle of the ice. After nearly a minute of zone-cycling time with several good scoring chances, the play ends when Datsyuk prevents a clear from the corner when Ryan McDonagh gets to a loose puck after a Johan Franzen short side stuff attempt. Pavel blocks the clearing attempt and walks up the boards towards where Alfredsson was just standing. As this cycle happens, Alfie moves to the middle of the ice in a coverage hole between McDonagh low and Dorsett watching the point. Pavel feeds it there and Alfredsson one-times it in. Datsyuk will get a plus for preventing the clear. Franzen will get the screener's assist for blocking Talbot's view of the pass and shot as well, despite the abuse he takes. About 30 seconds before the goal, Kronwall also has a step-up which prevents a Rangers clear. This will earn Kronwall a plus as well.

3rd Period 02:18 - New York Goal: Mats Zuccarello (wrist shot) from Dominic Moore and Marc Staal
Tie game again on a rebound put-away for the Rangers. The Wings lose possession on a messed-up breakout which turns the puck back over to the Rangers at center ice. They back up to their own zone and turn it up the opposite side wing to get back in the zone. Moore gets a shot off from outside the dot which Howard punches out to the opposite point where Staal fires it in on net. Howard stops this one, but the rebound gets out to Zuccarello, who throws it back into the net immediately. No minuses will be cleared on this goal, as just about everybody has a chance to do something better. The loss of the puck is on Lashoff, Tootoo, and Bertuzzi, who will each get an extra half-minus. Zuccarello is Andersson's man and again, he doesn't have the coverage here that he needs to have. Andersson will pick up an extra minus.

Overtime 04:47 - New York Goal: Derick Brassard (wrist shot) from Benoit Pouliot
New York gets the OT game-winner on two bad pinch decisions and a breakaway. Drew Miller carries a puck into the Rangers' zone and wins a board battle behind the net to get a chance to throw it through the crease. The puck comes harmlessly out the other end and heads to the half-board. Quincey makes a decision to pinch here and race Pouliot to the puck. Pouliot is able to punch the puck up ice past Quincey and head up ice on what is now a 2-on-1. DeKeyser decides to do the exact same thing and race Pouliot to the loose puck in the neutral zone. Unfortunately, the gambit doesn't work and Pouliot is able to feed the puck to the center of the ice where Brassard is joining the rush. Brassard receives the pass and comes in all alone on Howard where he snaps it through for the game-winner. Miller will get his minus cleared. He makes the right simple play trying to create offense. I don't like Weiss' decision to go behind the net instead of to the net-front where Miller fights to get it. Weiss will keep his minus for helping create this turnover. Essentially, both defensemen make the exact same mistake. The difference here is that DeKeyser is absolutely the last man back and he has to know it. Quincey will earn an extra minus for the mistake and DeKeyser will get a minus and a half.

Penalty Adjustments

1st Period 01:08 - Benoit Pouliot (goaltender interference): He gets kind of pushed in, but I'm not complaining. No adjustment.
1st Period 06:38 - Taylor Pyatt (high-sticking):
Kindl is the recipient of an irresponsible stick on a Rangers forecheck. No adjustment here. Not a drawn call; just a mistake.
1st Period 09:27 - Brendan Smith (slashing): Stick-on-stick slash to hold off a rushing player. Still hate this penalty, still can't completely absolve players for it. Half-minus to Smith.

2nd Period 16:53 - Kyle Quincey (interference): The Wings get caught running around in their own zone and Quincey knocks a guy down away from the play, going to the box in the process. Quincey will get a minus.
2nd Period 18:32 - Taylor Pyatt (holding):
Tatar does some great work low in the Rangers' zone to shake his D-man and force a hold by Pyatt. Tatar will get a plus.

3rd Period 05: - Kyle Quincey (holding): The Wings lose about 20 seconds' worth of board battles before Quincey hog-ties his man and goes to the box. Minus for Quincey.
3rd Period 07:12 - J.T. Miller (interference):
The Rangers take themselves off the power play as Miller knocks down Lashoff in front of the Red Wings' net. No adjustment.

Bonus Ratings

+1 for Daniel Alfredsson, Henrik Zetterberg, and Tomas Tatar: They need to create more offense, but these three did well in this game. They were consistently dangerous.

Honorable Mentions:

Joakim Andersson is really struggling lately. It feels like somebody else should get a minus, but there's not really a whipping boy to be found who didn't get blame in how the goals themselves turned out.
