Detroit Red Wings Recall Jonas Gustavsson, Assign Petr Mrazek to Grand Rapids

The goalie shuffle!

Scott Rovak-USA TODAY Sports

Detroit, MI... The Detroit Red Wings today announced that goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has been recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. Gustavsson was assigned to Grand Rapids on Saturday on a conditioning loan and started for the Griffins in yesterday’s 2-1 win over the Charlotte Checkers, stopping 26 of the 27 shots he faced. Detroit also announced that rookie goaltender Petr Mrazek has been reassigned to Grand Rapids. The 21-year-old netminder made 21 saves in Detroit’s 3-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild last night at Xcel Energy Center. Mrzaek posted a 1-1-0 record with a 2.02 goals-against average and .922 save percentage over his first two National Hockey League starts.

Matt Saler (@OntheWings) was watching Gustavsson's start in Grand Rapids and commented on his conditioning.

This is exactly why there's an allowance for a conditioning stint where the team doesn't have to put a guy on waivers to get into some real game action. The Wings got to see if Gustavsson's groin was good to go without risking him in an NHL game.

Mrazek being sent down was an eventuality. Part of being the "goalie of the future" means that you're not the goalie of right now. He'll get much more work with the Griffins anyway.
