Game 17 or 48

Rick Osentoski-USA TODAY Sports

Get bent, Red Wings.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Jimmy Howard lost the head-to-head and will get a -1 overall. His defense did him more favors than he did them.

The Goals

1st Period 00:18 - Detroit Goal: Damien Brunner (wrap-around) unassisted
Brunner forechecks aggressively and brings the puck out front for a wrap-around that goes off Bobrovski and in to open the scoring. Filppula will get a non-touch assist for forcing the Foligno turnover to a hard-charging Brunner, who gets a bonus plus.

1st Period 02:40 - Detroit Goal: Valtteri Filppula (tip-in) from Brian Lashoff and Henrik Zetterberg
Quick zone entry, good passing, and smart aggressive play leads to two Brian Lashoff shots from within the faceoff circle. The second deflects off Filppula's skate and in. Brunner will get the third assist and another half-plus for forcing the play and helping it get to Lashoff.

1st Period 04:22 - Columbus Goal (PP): RJ Umberger (wrist shot) from Cam Atkinson and Jack Johnson
Umberger is on rebound patrol in front when he gets one. Lashoff makes a couple of mistakes and he's going to get a coverage minus for not clearing out Umberger out front.

3rd Period 05:03 - Columbus Goal: Derek Dorsett (wrist shot) from Derrick Brassard
Ugly work in front of the net by the Jackets yields a tie game as Dorsett gets a rebound. Henrik Zetterberg will get a turnover minus for handing the puck right to Brassard for the initial shot. Brunner and Filppula won't get minuses. White and Huskins are both scrambling a bit here to make up for a turnover that's not their fault after what is a won board battle as far as their jobs are concerned. Each will keep his minus though. Through this, one of them has to prevent Dorsett from getting this.

3rd Period 19:35 - Columbus Goal: Vinny Prospal (backhand) from James Wisniewski and Derek Dorsett
The Jackets take a turnover the other way and end up getting it to Prospal all alone in front of the net for a backhand spin past a sprawling Howard. I don't always punish guys who are trying to create offense, but Damien Brunner will get a turnover minus on the pass attempt in the offensive zone that turned into the game-winning rush. Filppula and Zetterberg won't get minuses. Lashoff makes a poor coverage read here and will get an extra minus. He's late to recognize Brunner getting back to cover Dorsett and doesn't get back to cover Prospal going to the front of the net.

Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)

1st Period 08:09 - Daniel Cleary (interference): On the power play, Bobrovsky loses his stick to the side of the net. Dan Cleary pushes it just out of his reach. You can't push a guy's stick away from him while he's trying to retrieve it. Cleary will get a minus.
1st Period 19:37 - Jan Mursak (high sticking): Minus for Mursak. He wasn't forced to do this by a hit. This one is automatic.

2nd Period 09:40 - Fedor Tyutin (interference): Jordin Tootoo earns a plus as he pokes the puck past Tyutin and heads by him, forcing the Columbus defender to step into his path.

3rd Period 08:56 - Derek Dorsett (interference): This one is all on the shift and not the specific instance that draws the penalty. Tootoo is a wrecking ball out there and it pisses off Dorsett who goes after him. Tootoo gets a plus.
3rd Period 10:47 - Derek Mackenzie (tripping): Tatar hustles to get a great chance and forces Mackenzie to haul him down. Plus for Tatar.

Bonus Ratings

+1 to Tomas Tatar: I really think he should get more ice time with how well he's been playing.
-1 to Justin Abdelkader: He didn't have it in this game. He turned the puck over and killed too many cycles.
+1 to Jonathan Ericsson: Still the Wings' best defender. I think he had a strong performance.

Honorable Mentions:

I blame Graham for Lashoff struggling in this game.
