CSSI Analysis: Red Wings 2 - Wild 4

Game 30 of 48

Tom Szczerbowski

Hey, the Red Wings lost. You know what that does to my intros.

The refs cost the Red Wings a goal on a bad call that technically wasn't reviewable for kind of a good reason. The rest of the game wasn't horribly officiated, no matter how much the vein pulsing out of my neck disagrees with me.

Goalie Ratings

-1 in the head-to-head for Howard. Jimmy didn't have a bad game, but he got outplayed. He's got to be able to trust his defense better than what he got. Overall: Even.

The Goals

1st Period 02:04 - Minnesota Goal: Devin Setoguchi (wrist shot) from Matt Cullen and Pierre-Marc Bouchard
The Wild turn two players making mistakes into a goal as Cullen picks up a dump-around and hits Setoguchi out front for a goal. Zetterberg will get a minus-and-a-half for both losing Cullen and allowing the pass to him so easily. Smith will get a coverage minus for getting neither positioning nor stick no Setoguchi. Filppula and Brunner will be cleared while Lashoff's minus will be halved. He's on his man, but if he gets back quicker, he's got a good shot at blocking the pass to Setoguchi.

2nd Period 03:51 - Minnesota Goal (PP): Kyle Brodziak (tip in) from Jared Spurgeon and Ryan Suter
Minny gains the zone with speed and makes the Wings pay as a cross-ice pass hits Brodziak in front for the goal. Ericsson and Lashoff get coverage minuses. Riggy lets Spurgeon have the wing too easily and Lashoff doesn't pick up the goal-scorer.

2nd Period 09:09 - Detroit Goal: Gustav Nyquist (wrist shot) unassisted
Nyquist challenges the point hard on a defensive zone faceoff loss by Andersson. His work pays off as he pokes the puck out of the zone and heads off to the races before sliding it through Backstrom's legs for the goal. Nyquist will get a bonus plus and self-assist for making this play happen.

2nd Period 10:49 - Minnesota Goal: Mikko Koivu (wrist shot) from Charlie Coyle and Zach Parise
Bad coverage leads to an odd-man rush and bad assignment coverage turns that into a goal after the Wings over-collapse. Datsyuk will pick up an extra minus and a half for letting Parise behind him on the odd-man rush. Ericsson's minus will be halved. He's actually doing his job boxing out in front. Abdelkader will get a coverage minus for chasing way too far down and not picking up Koivu in the slot, who has time to collect a loose puck, spin, and fire it in. Kronwall will get an extra half-minus. The pass is hard to block for him, but it might be easier if he's got his stick in position.

2nd Period 17:15 - Minnesota Goal (PP): Devin Setoguchi (wrist shot) from Dany Heatley and Earmark Bouchard
The Wings break down on the PP, allowing a pretty easy goal for the Wild. Zetterberg and Lashoff are going to pull minuses on this one. Z leaves the slot open for Heatley and Lashoff is still looking for the puck by the time Setoguchi puts it in.

3rd Period 19:46 - Detroit Goal (PP): Drew Miller (pure spite) from Jordin Tootoo and Cory Emmerton
Oh whatever.

Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)

1st Period 12:43 - Zenon Konopka (tripping): Kindl gets good body position and keeps his feet moving. It's more a dumb play by Konopka than a great play by Kindl, but it's still worth a half-plus for Kindl.

2nd Period 00:30 - Niklas Kronwall (high-sticking): Kronner has his stick down, but this is a head shot. Minus for Kronwall.
2nd Period 15:36 -
Jakub Kindl (tripping): Kindl loses a board battle and jabs his stick under Zucker's feet, tripping him up. Minus for Kindl.

Bonus Ratings

-1 to Johan Franzen: There are levels of invisibility to any hockey game and I had to check to make sure he even dressed for this one.

Honorable Mentions:

Brunner and Filppula had good jump, but need more than that.
