Let me just get this out of the way early: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh man watching the Ducks lose their composure was a huge cathartic moment for me after nearly 20 minutes of clenching because I was near-positive Anaheim was going to tie it up. Fortunately, Anaheim's leadership decided to take ten a little early and the Wings won 2-1.
The referees did a slightly better job controlling this game than they did the last one, but the standard was not consistent. Matt Beleskey punching Brendan Smith in the face behind the play should have gotten him more than a minor.
Jimmy Howard won the head-to-head again. In fact, he was the Wings' best player and a huge part of the reason they won. Anaheim took more than 60% of the shots in this game and Howard came up gigantic several times, earning a +2 overall rating.
1st Period 04:14 - Detroit Goal (PP): Daniel Cleary (tip in) from Jakub Kindl and Brendan Smith
The Wings' 2nd PP unit keeps their road scoring streak alive as Cleary tips in a Kindl slapper to make it 1-0. Nyquist will get the third assist for the zone entry and pass to Smith. Cleary will get half a self-assist for making sure the Wings kept the zone against an aggressive PK on the boards.
1st Period 08:46 - Detroit Goal: Drew Miller (wrist shot) from Ian White and Cory Emmerton
The Wings get into the zone on a great steal and make it count as White throws a puck to the front of the net where Miller slams home the rebound. Gustav Nyquist will get a bonus plus and an assist. Drew Miller will get a half self-assist for pretty much the same reason as Cleary above. He helps keep this play going early.
2nd Period 19:14 - Anaheim Goal (PP): Ryan Getzlaf (wrist shot) from Saku Koivu and Corey Perry
No adjustment on this goal, as the Ducks' power play moves the puck extremely well to get Getzlaf a shot from a scoring area.
Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)
1st Period 02:42 - Francois Beauchemin (tripping): Filppula will get a plus for pressuring Beauchemin on the boards and drawing a trip.
1st Period 10:45 - Jakub Kindl (interference): This is a bit of a soft call which will earn Kindl a half-minus. In honesty, I think it was caused in part by a non-call on Joakim Andersson moments earlier and the two acts combined led to the one penalty. I'm going to experiment on giving Andersson a half-minus, but I will change this if enough of you disagree with me.
2nd Period 07:16 - Toni Lydman (interference): Datsyuk earns a plus for drawing a penalty by scaring Lydman into stepping into his way to deny him some ice in front.
2nd Period 17:38 - Daniel Cleary (interference): This one is made too easy to call and Cleary should have never put himself in a position to take it, as the Wings are on the PP and Cleary makes things too tight at the top of the zone, eventually interfering with Cogliano. Cleary will get a minus.
3rd Period 14:40 - Johan Franzen (tripping): Mule gets caught behind his check and brings down Selanne for his trouble. Franzen will get a minus.
3rd Period 19:26 - Everybody important on the Ducks (meltdown): It all starts with a trip by Koivu called on Getzlaf drawn by Filppula pumping his feet & moving hard. Filppula will get a plus.
+1 to Pavel Datsyuk: He really had a strong game in this one in ways that didn't show up on the scoresheet. I was very impressed with his level in this game.
+1 to Johan Franzen: Mule was the only Wings player on the positive side of the Corsi ledger for this game and had a strong defensive effort. The bonus plus here moves him back to an adjusted 0 on the night, which I feel is right for him.
+0.5 to Jakub Kindl: Kindl had a very strong game against the lower line competition. He is playing very confident lately and has tied Ericsson for 2nd on the team for defenseman scoring.
Kronwall and Ericsson each had a strong game, but each of them also had a head-slapping turnover which prevented me from giving bonus pluses.
