CSSI Analysis: Western Conference Quarterfinals Game 6: Red Wings 4 - Ducks 3 (OT)

Gregory Shamus

What a dumb sport we love.

CSSI Methodology Explanation here

Goalie Ratings

Jimmy Howard was better than Jonas Hiller. He made a save in the second period that I'm still not sure how he got. Aside from the head-to-head win, Howard will get a +1 rating.

The Goals

1st Period 18:48 - Detroit Goal: Pavel Datsyuk (backhand) from Henrik Zetterberg and Jonathan Ericsson
Pavel Datsyuk shows what happens when he gets room to drag the puck off the boards as Z feeds him with just enough room and he answers by dangling Beauchemin and backhanding it into the net. Abdelkader will get a screener's assist for going to the net-front. Kronwall will get the third assist. Datsyuk will get a self-assist and a bonus plus. He does a lot of great work here to make this happen. Zetterberg does almost as much great work, including a beautiful pass through Beauchemin to spring Pavel. Half-plus and half-assist (bonus) to Zetterberg.

2nd Period 11:31 - Anaheim Goal: Kyle Palmieri (Brendan Smith) from Emerson Etem
The Ducks pull even as Kyle Palmieri gets room rushing into the zone. Palmieri's shot rings off the post and right back out where it hits Brendan Smith and goes into the net. Kyle Quincey gets the extra minus for a neutral zone turnover which gives Palmieri the puck. The forwards, Samuelsson, Emmerton, and Bertuzzi will be cleared of minuses. They were changing behind the play when this happens. Smith will keep his minus, but I'm not going to fault him extra for what is a terrible result on good positioning.

3rd Period 06:19 - Detroit Goal (PP): Henrik Zetterberg (slap shot) from Mikael Samuelsson and Pavel Datsyuk
Detroit takes a 2-1 lead as Zetterberg skates to the top of the circle and blasts a slapper through traffic into the net. Niklas Kronwall will get the third assist on the zone entry created here. Franzen will get the screener's assist as well.

3rd Period 11:30 - Detroit Goal: Daniel Cleary (tip-in) from Justin Abdelkader and Valtteri Filppula
After another Wings' PP, Detroit goes up 3-1 as Abdelkader chucks the puck from the half-boards to the front of the net and it deflects in off Daniel Cleary working in Holmstrom's office. Valtteri Filppula will earn a bonus plus and Dan Cleary a half-plus for the forechecking work which creates the initial chance which rebounds out to Abdelkader.

3rd Period 16:32 - Anaheim Goal: Emerson Etem (wrist shot) unassisted
Filppula gives back some of the good mojo he had earned with the last goal by absolutely handing the Ducks this one. As Flip skates behind his own net, he passes back to nobody in particular. Etem is there to pick up the loose puck and shove it past Howard. Filppula will get a minus-and-a-half for the turnover. This one is egregious. Cleary will have half his minus removed. The play comes through his corner a while before the goal, but this isn't his fault. Kronwall will be cleared of his minus. He's doing good defensive work in front of the net for this entire shift. Franzen will get an extra half-minus for coverage as he's the guy who should have been there for the terrible Filppula turnover (which still... Flip's got a lot of open ice in front of him to look at. He can't make this decision). Ericsson will keep his minus and get an extra half-minus. Between the Wings losing possession because he tries to pass to a covered man and Kronwall bailing out a missed assignment earlier, Ericsson indirectly leads to enough stuff here to keep his share of the blame.

3rd Period 17:23 - Anaheim Goal: Bobby Ryan (wrist shot) from Corey Perry and Francois Beauchemin
The Ducks pull even just 50 seconds later on a cross-crease feed to Bobby Ryan that just infuriates the fuck out of me. Smith will get an extra coverage minus on the play. He goes in with Perry on a dump-in and plays the man instead of the puck, which doesn't work when he doesn't get the man. The pass from Beauchemin to Perry which sets up the low 2-on-1 is Pavel Datsyuk's responsibility. Datsyuk is a half-second slow to get in this lane and will get an extra minus. Zetterberg, Abdelkader, and Quincey will be cleared of minuses. Z & Abby are covering the points as they're supposed to. Quincey is slightly more interesting. The way I see it, Quincey was tripped on this play. He should have been on Beauchemin in the corner, but is late getting there through no fault of his own. He doesn't stay down long to sell it or anything, he's actually impeded.

Overtime 01:04 - Detroit Goal: Henrik Zetterberg (leadership shot) from Niklas Kronwall and Pavel Datsyuk
Zetterberg wins it in OT with a great slapper from basically the same spot where he scored his first goal. After a Datsyuk faceoff win and a Kronwall feed, Z fires it through a screen and in. The screener who will get the assist is Abdelkader. Zetterbeg will get a bonus plus and self-assist. He helps the faceoff win by getting in and canceling Cogliano's stick to make sure it gets back to Kronwall.

Penalty Adjustments (pluses and minuses only)

1st Period 05:46 - Ryan Getzlaf (tripping): Samuelsson earns a plus as he steps around Getzlaf and gets taken down by a trip. Dumb play by Getzlaf, but credit to Sammy for moving with speed through center.

3rd Period 09:12 - Andrew Cogliano (tripping): Datsyuk earns a plus on a rare penalty call in this game. Same as Samuelsson's

Bonus Ratings

-1 to Valtteri Filppula: Keep in mind that this is an adjustment on top of the one he got for the turnover on Etem's goal. He was given weaker competition to shut down and failed in that role by-and-large.
+0.5 to Gustav Nyquist: The Wings' third line didn't perform as exceptionally as they had, but Nyquist was making very good things happen in this game.
-1 to Carlo Colaiacovo: I thought he had a very good first half of the game, but he really struggled in the second half. At one point he also deflected a puck in on Jimmy Howard in what would have been the own-goal which would have made me pull my spine from my body and throw it through my television.

Honorable Mentions:

Quincey wasn't bad save for the bad turnover that led to the Palmieri goal. Kindl was decent as well. I liked Bert and I liked Andersson.
