2014 Winter Olympics: Johan Franzen out for Team Sweden

Doug Pensinger

Some bad news for the Tre Kronor today via Helene.

So no Sochi for the Mule. It's possible that teammate Gustav Nyquist will join him, but there are other candidates for Sweden to consider, including Boston's Carl Soderberg Washington's Marcus Johansson.

What concerns me is that Franzen was placed on Injured reserve after Sunday's game against Florida, his first game back after missing 16 with a concussion (apparently suffered on December 15th against Tampa Bay on a somewhat innocuous-looking hit by Radko Gudas). The newest stint on IR told us that Franzen was definitely going to miss another week of action, but with the Olympic break still more than a week away from this news, we should realistically be looking at being without Franzen until after the Sochi tournament is over.

Franzen has already missed one game and is likely to miss another five before the break. If the Wings need to place him on Long-Term Injured Reserve for salary cap reasons (i.e. the return of Stephen Weiss), Franzen would also have to miss the first four games after the Olympics, the last of which being the Nick Lidstrom jersey retirement night on March 6th at home against the Avalanche.

I hope he uses the next month to get his head right and is able to rejoin the team for the playoff push in march. I feel badly for him that he has to miss the Olympics.
