World Junior Hockey Championships 2015 results: Day Two

Two days down at the World Juniors and Canada is looking like a home powerhouse while Sweden has found a nice scoring touch.

Sweden vs. Denmark

Featuring: Axel Holmstrom (0 points, 5 SOG, 71% Faceoff wins, -1) & Cristoffer Ehn (0 points, 2 SOG, 67% Faceoff wins)

The Swedes took down Denmark 5-1 in the early game on Saturday with a dominant performance, putting up 44 shots to just 20 against. Axel Holmstrom was unfortunate to be on the ice for a goal against, but he had a good game being what is essentially the grinder role alongside William Nylander. Holmstrom played a lot of net-front and moved the puck well, even drawing a penalty. Ehn had a great opportunity for a goal that he put back into a goalie who was sliding across trying to get across his crease. Other than that, I thought Ehn was positionally fantastic, but a bit slow to pick up on loose pucks in the offensive zone.

Finland vs. Slovakia

Featuring: Julius Vahatalo (0 points, 0 shots, 0 idea if he actually played again)

Finland lost their second game by a score of 2-1 against the team that got blown out by Canada on opening day. Once again, the Fins scored first, but couldn’t hold the lead throughout the opening period. Just 6:03 into the second, they gave up the game-winner to Matus Holenda. Vahatalo’s line on the IIHF stat sheet (PDF link) is completely blank, but his linemates did manage to register shots on goal

Switzerland vs. Czech Republic

Featuring: No important Prospects

The Swiss won 5-2, giving the Czechs their second loss of the tourney by the exact same score. Kevin Fiala, the 11th overall pick by Nashville in this year’s draft led the way for Switzerland, which must have been bittersweet for his family of Czech heritage.

Canada vs. Germany

Featuring: Joe Hicketts (0 points, 0 SOG, 2 PIM, +1)

Canada still has not allowed a goal in this tournament, as they shut out Germany 4-0 in their second game. Connor McDavid scored a goal, which was nice for him. Hicketts didn’t factor into any of the scoring, but he did take a holding the stick penalty.
