The refs let a lot of stuff go in this game, but they did so consistently. I prefer a tighter-called game than this one was, but I don't think it made a difference. Tampa went 1-for-2 on the power play and Detroit 0-for-2. Tampa also scored a shorthanded goal. Shots were 32-28 in favor of the home team.
Petr Mrazek played like garbage in this game and Ben Bishop had some real timely saves during a period where the game was still actually close. At least McCollum had a good third period.
1st Period 02:04 - Tampa Bay Goal: Cedric Paquette (backhand) from Alex Killorn and Jason Garrison
Tampa gets an early goal on a strong forecheck that gets Paquette two big chances in front that Mrazek can only stop one of. Glendening ends up separating Pauette from teh puck down low for Smith to clear up to Sheahan at the half-wall. Sheahan is hooked by Drouin here, allowing the puck to get back to Garrison at the point for a shot into traffic that Killorn tips on net. Mrazek makes the firs save and then another very good toe save on Paquette in front, but he can't make the third stop as Paquette has all the time in the world to lift it over him. I'm going to clear Weiss on this play and halve Glendening's minus. Weiss is covering the far point and Glendening does a pretty good job to free the puck for Smith, but he could have jumped quicker to the middle to help out with the net-front (which isn't his job on this setup, but he was close). Sheahan is the victim of a hook, but he's also a victim of cute decision-making that makes it an issue in the first place. Putting more body between the puck and Drouin keeps the hook from mattering. Sheahan will keep his minus. Ouellet is around and the closest person to Paquette during the goal, but he's also stuck covering two people on this play. He'll keep his minus, but the breakdown oat the front is on Brendan Smith. First off, Smith's decision to pass to Sheahan wasn't the right one. The pressure was already on that side. He could have either reversed it or delayed a bit. This is going to earn Smith a half-minus on the turnover. Additionally, Smith is caught watching his apss instead of getting back to the front of the net where he belongs. His slowlness getting back hangs Ouellet out to dry as he's drawn a bit high by trying to take space away from Killorn. Smith should have been in position all along and he wasn't. Coverage minus for Smith on this mistake.
1st Period 11:59 - Detroit Goal: Darren Helm (wrist shot) from Jonathan Ericsson and Pavel Datsyuk
Detroit ties it as Helm dangles behind the net and gets space to step out front and snipe it home. The offensive zone faceoff is scrambled, but Datsyuk is able to poke it away from Stamkos to Ericsson for a dump-in behind the net where Helm gets to it. Nobody is particularly close to Helm when he gets the puck moving to the corner to Bishop's right side. Nesterov finally comes out to keep him from stepping out front while Tatar slowly crosses through the slot to drag Garrison over to the same side of the ice. Helm cuts back on Nesterov and skates quickly back behind the net. Filppula is watching the far corner, but he backs out to cover Datsyuk going to the front of the net. Tatar brings Garrison to the far post as Helm steps out from the corner of the trapezoid. Nesterov has frozen himself at the net-front, so Helm uses the space created by Datsyuk and Filppula coming through to get into a good shooting position were he snaps it in. Datsyuk and Tatar will get a half-plus each for their work on making space on this play while Helm will get a full plus for helping make space enough for himself.
1st Period 19:23 - Tampa Bay Goal: Cedric Paquette (wrist shot) from Jonathan Drouin and Alex Killorn
Tampa takes the lead as Paquette snipes the top corner on Mrazek. Ouellet tries to tip a dumped-in puck past his forechecker only to have it blocked by Drouin, who starts the cycle for the Bolts in the corner to Mrazek's left. Killorn, Paquette, and Drouin work it around the corner, getting a sharp angle shot on net and recovering while holding off Ouellet and Datsyuk. Eventually, Killorn drags Brendan Smith to the very front of the net while Drouin gets it to Paquette in position to take it off the wall and to the dot where he snaps it by Mrazek's ear. Tatar and Helm will each have their minuses halved on this play. At one point, each is the supporting winger on this play who is just close enough to make a play but holds off. It's not as much their fault, but it is enough. Smith is doing a better job keeping his positioning, but will keep his minus. The dangerous shot earlier on the sequence went right through him and he kind of let himself get trapped by Killorn at the net-front. Ouellet will get a half-minus for the turnover that led to the cycling and then another minus for the coverage once the cycling started. He was thoroughly outmuscled on this play. Datsyuk will also pick up a minus. It's his responsibility to keep Paquette from escaping with the puck to the middle and he's the one who failed.
2nd Period 04:18 - Tampa Bay Goal (PP): Steven Stamkos (one-timer) from Anton Stralman and Jonathan Drouin
Stamkos extends the lead on the power play as he one-times a puck through Mrazek from inside the top of the circle. Darren Helm clears it down ice and the team goes off to change. Since it's the 2nd period, they're farther away, which lets Ben Bishop come out and chuck the puck up ice to the far blue line for an easy dangerous zone re-entry by Stamkos, who just misses wide from the slot. Drouin recovers halfway up the bench-side boards and skates it in past Miller, who is so amazed by Drouin that he drops his stick. From the outside hash marks, Drouin backhands a pass all the way to Stralman at the top point of the umbrella setup. Sheahan skates out to challenge as Ericsson moves to the inside hash marks of the left faceoff circle and Stralman throws a pass to Stamkos in that circle to the outside quadrant. Stamkos one-times the puck and it gets right through Mrazek. This is a save I want Mrazek to make. Stamkos is a hell of a scorer, but he's a bit farther away from the truly dangerous area of the ice. Ericsson's positioning isn't ideal, but the puck movement is quick and he's drawn a bit farther off by the adjustment required when Miller loses his stick (same with Sheahan). Even though I think the goal is a bit on the soft side, I'm going to give Miller a minus. Him dropping his stick puts the PK in scramble mode from which they don't recover.
2nd Period 11:03 - Tampa Bay Goal (SH): Cedric Paquette (wrist shot) from Brian Boyle
Paquette gets the hat trick on a shorthanded odd-man rush that Mrazek can't stop. Zetterberg loses an offensive zone faceoff, but Hustle by Abdelkader forces Garrison to clear it up ice where Weiss cuts off Paquette to move the puck up toward the point. Kronwall is standing up top to receive it, but Zetterberg cuts it off, taking it to the point while Kronwall moves over to the middle of the ice. As Z turns to face the zone, Boyle steps into him with a good angle to pinch him off at he boards. Zetterberg tries dangling around Boyle, but can't get free and is left simply trying to play the puck around him to the middle. Unfortunately, the pass misses Weiss, who is stepping up higher in the zone to help and ends up going to Paquette instead. Paquette chops the puck over Weiss' head to get it out of the zone and then steps around his man to chase the loose puck at center. Kronwall comes back and over to pick it up, but as he reaches out to take control with Paquette bearing down, the puck bounces over his stick. Paquette is able to take control with his momentum carrying him towards the Wings' zone and Kronwall back in one-on-one position. Sadly, while this is happening, Boyle has already jumped past Zetterberg in the neutral zone to make this a two-on-one rush. Paquette enters on the right wing side with Boyle crossing underneath him taking up the lane from middle to slight-right. Kronwall plays pretty close to Boyle in the middle here, giving Paquette space to get to the dot and snap it short side on Mrazek. This play is zero percent Nyquist's or Abdelkader's fault, so each will be cleared. Weiss will keep his minus for essentially not hauling down Paquette and taking a penalty. Zetterberg will get a turnover minus and a coverage half-minus for how this play went down. He misplayed the puck badly at the point, which allowed this to develop. Kronwall will get a coverage minus for letting Paquette get the puck at center in the first place. Can't afford to have the puck bounce over your stick like this.
2nd Period 17:39 - Tampa Bay Goal: Mark Barberio (slap shot) from Andrej Sustr and Tyler Johnson
Tampa makes it 5-1 on a faceoff win slapshot for a guy's first goal of the game. The Wings ice the puck as Nyquist misses a pass from Smith behind his own net to the blue line up the boards. Tyler Johnson wins the faceoff just enough for Sustr to come in and sweep the puck from right behind his centerman to Barberio at the point. Barberio one-times the puck from the top middle of the zone and Mrazek doesn't get his glove up in time to stop it. I'm going to clear Jurco, Ouellet, and Smith for this goal. Zetterberg will keep his minus on the faceoff loss and Nyquist will keep his minus on being responsible for the icing which led to this faceoff.
1st Period - Brett Connolly (roughing double-minor) against Kyle Quincey (roughing): Quincey smashes JT Brown with a clean check in the Wings' zone and Connolly rushes in to instigate a fight, getting the extra penalty. Quincey will get a plus for a good clean hit, which makes big stupid babies like Connolly mad. They give each player a roughing instead of a fight, but that doesn't matter.
2nd Period 03:30 - Joakim Andersson (holding) against Brian Boyle: Andersson is forechecking in the Tampa zone and doesn't get good body position chasing after a puck along the boards. Joker grabs on and takes his man down, getting a penalty for his trouble. Andersson will get a minus.
2nd Period 08:31 - Justin Abdelkader (goalie interference): Abby crashes the crease and gets a little bit of help being pushed in as Bishop sells the contact aggressively. The dive should cancel this out, but Abdelkader needs to be more careful. Abby will get a half-minus.
2nd Period 10:04 - Ryan Callahan (boarding) against Kyle Quincey: Q gets plastered into the boards by Callahan traveling 15 feet to smash a guy from a severe angle. Callahan sits for boarding here. No adjustment here. Just a stupid hit by Callahan.
2nd Period 13:10 - Justin Abdelkader & Jason Garrison (fighting): Abdelkader loses this fight. No adjustment. Chalk this up to either sticking up for himself or emotions boiling over. Whichever helps.

Datsyuk had a pretty solid night against the top line for Tampa. There was that bad defensive play which led to what turned out to be the game-winner, but Datsyuk's line was pretty much the only one that moved the puck in the right direction. Zetterberg got handled by Palat-Johnson-Kucherov, which is essentially Tampa's version of our Kid Line. Sheahan's line got smoked by Cedric Pauette's group in what turned out to be the key matchup of the night.
The usage here highlights how much better Zetterberg's line needed to be in this game.
After several games in a row where the Red Wings were winning despite bad habits, you look at a game like this as inevitable. You hope that they pull out of them on their own, but whatever. Losses happen and with the way this one was timed, the hope is that the ass-kicking was stark enough to shake them out of the recent spate of mistakes.
